“Good night, Dad. Have a safe trip home.” Again she kissed his cheek. “It’s about time you were with a man who has a head on his shoulders. This one doesn’t seem like a waste of time and life.” He hitched his chin in Griffin’s direction. “Dad, Griffin’s—” Griffin reached around her to shake Walt’s hand. “Good to meet you, Walt. We’ll see you at the wedding.” In the elevator, Indy took the cake back. “You didn’t have to do that. I never intended for my father to think we were a couple.” “No problem. It seemed to make him happy.” “Yeah, that’ll last. He’ll suddenly remember which daughter he was talking to.” The corners of her mouth pulled down, and they got off the elevator. He didn’t know what to say. No words of comfort would erase the pain. “Why is he so hard on you?” The low, humorless chuckle didn’t fit her. “So many reasons. I was a wild teenager. Big surprise, right? Then I went to the city for college to get away from him. I’m not married with a pack of kids.” She sighed. “But he’ll never forgive me for taking Quinn away from him.” They walked out to the street. “She doesn’t look like a hostage to me.” “She would’ve been. She was seventeen when our mom died. She spent the next year doing everything for Dad while he poured himself into a bottle. She’d already applied to college here and had scholarship money waiting. Quinn is scary smart, but she was going to walk away from that to take care of Dad. One day, I drove home, packed her stuff into my car, and brought her to Chicago.” “It’s been what, twelve years?” He stepped closer to her. “Dad’s good at grudges.” “She could’ve gone back at any time.” “But it’s my fault. If I had never shown her the world outside Hooperville, she would’ve been happy there forever.” “You think so?” “No, but it’s what he thinks. She would’ve grown old and bitter. Luckily we have Lydia to keep an eye on him, or he probably would’ve moved in with Quinn.” He looked up and down the street. “Where’s your car?” She sighed again. “In the shop. Something’s wrong with the transmission.” “How are you getting home?” “Same way I got here—public transportation.” “You’re taking the bus?” Somehow, he couldn’t picture her standing at a bus stop and clambering up the steps, pushing into the crowd. “Yes, I’m taking the bus. What’s so funny?” “How many times on your trip did a guy try to pick you up?” That he could imagine, especially with her bar uniform on. She shrugged. “No more than when I’m at work. The unwashed masses are not as bad as you picture them.” “Come on, I’ll give you a ride.” “Not necessary. I don’t mind taking the bus, and my apartment is out of your way.” “Come on. By the time the bus shows, I’ll have you halfway home.” They walked to his car in silence. “What, no Jag tonight?” she asked, approaching the SUV. “Sorry, I came from the office.” Indy opened the rear passenger door and carefully placed the cake on the floor. She closed the door and leaned against it. “Thank you for tonight. You were an excellent distraction.” She smiled up at him, golden eyes reflecting the streetlights. On impulse, he lowered his lips to hers. Her heady scent grabbed him, and he pressed her against the car. She tasted even better than he imagined. He expected light and breezy but found her spicy and secretive. He braced his hands on the car behind her, trapping her with his body and preventing himself from grabbing her. His fingers wanted to tangle in her long hair. He pulled back before he could want more. “Wow. What was that for?” she asked with a smile. “It’ll keep your dad happy.” “That would make sense if he were watching, but we’re down the block and around the corner. And they’re on the fifth floor. He can’t possibly see us.” He gave a careless glance over his shoulder. “Huh, I guess you’re right.” She laughed lightly. “Thanks. It’s been much too long since I’ve been kissed like that.” He raised his eyebrows. Her comment said a lot about her previous lover. His eyes went back to her mouth. How could a man look at those lips and not want to taste? He opened the passenger door for her to get in before he forgot himself.

Blog Tour: Engaged to the EMT by Piper Rayne

A Sexy FAKE RELATIONSHIP rom com standalone written by a duo of two USA Bestselling Authors Luca Bianco is a jerk. There I said it. He thinks he’s so suave and sexy, walking around in his paramedic uniform stretched out by all his hard muscles and saving lives every day. I swear he thinks every woman in the world would kill for a chance to be with him. Men like Luca are good for one thing only—a one-night stand—not commitment. I don’t care if my friend did pay good money at a charity bachelor auction for me to go on a date with him, I refuse to do it. That is until Luca offers me a deal I can’t refuse, and I agree to be his pretend fiancé. The heat that’s simmered between us for a decade ignites and I’m not sure even Luca will be able to kickstart my heart after I call code blue. What’s that saying? Love is blind? Not true. I can see this head-on collision coming a mile away.

The light from the street reflects the humor shining in his eyes. “I’m just sick of the fighting.” “Fighting is what we do best. It’s basically how we communicate.” Then all the puzzle pieces join together in my head. I’m so stupid. “You want something.” We pull up in front of my house just as I realize what a fucking moron I am. “Nope.” He takes the keys, grabs the bag of food and gets out of the car. He’s totally playing me. I might not be a psychologist who can quickly spot a liar, but Luca, I know too well. Not well, but when it comes to our interactions—I know him. And this nice Luca, taking me to a Hawks game, buying me dinner, wanting to eat with me…this isn’t the Luca Bianco I know. I climb out of his car, the slam of the door echoing down the dark residential street. “Tell me what it is you want.” His lips remain straight, not even a hint of a smile or smirk. Another clear sign that this isn’t the Luca I know. “Come on. Let’s eat.” He nods in the direction of my house. “By prolonging whatever it is, you’re just pissing me off, which means if you need something, I’m more than likely going to say no. Or we could play a little game…” “How about we eat?” He waits patiently as I insert the key into my door, disengage the alarm that Cristian, Luca’s brother insisted we get installed. Police officers. Jeez. We step inside and he’s the one to shut the door and flick the lock. “Planning to have your way with me?” I’m not serious as I walk into the kitchen to grab us some drinks, utensils, and napkins. The sound of the television blaring drifts into the kitchen seconds later. With my hands full, I head back into the living room. “Feel free to make yourself at home,” I deadpan, handing Luca a Vitamin Water and a napkin. “Thanks.” He lifts the napkin and drink. “And thanks.” We sit on the couch because although our house is nice and newly redecorated thanks to Maddie’s mad skills, the family room area is small and the best place to see the television is the couch. No worries though, there’s still a cushion between us. I open up my box of food, a little bit of steam hitting my face. “I can’t just sit here and watch soccer with you and not know what you want.” I hate that I’ve had to resort to being sincere in my request. He opens up his own box and I’m a tad jealous I didn’t get the burger. It smells and looks delicious. Luca doesn’t respond, just stands and heads into the kitchen. He knows our house way too well thanks to his brothers always suggesting we meet here when we go out. I pop a cauliflower floret into my mouth, tasting the Korean flavor makes my mouth water. Opening up my Vitamin Water to cool my tongue, I ignore Luca’s return, instead, fixating on the television as he rounds the coffee table in front of me. The couch dips with the weight of his body which is now closer than before. I’ve never been alone with Luca, much less this close. I feel a shift in our volatile relationship like the stillness before a storm. It’s too quiet. It’s too calm. Too…enjoyable. “Here.” My gaze shifts from the television, although I couldn’t tell you the score of the game and I see he’s holding half his burger out to me. “What’s this?” I ask, loading my mouth with another califloret. Man, it’s hot. “I think you had a little bit of drool dripping from your mouth when I opened the container. How about we share?” He smiles. A smile I’ve only ever seen on his face with his friends, or his brothers, and especially his mom. He doesn’t even wear this smile when he’s with girls. At least not that I’ve ever seen. That fact runs around my stomach stirring up the butterflies to max flight. I don’t like this. It’s too damn calm. Where are the eighty mile per hour winds? “Luca, if you don't tell me what you want, I’m going to kick you out of my house.” I take half the burger and slide my cauliflower and fries closer to him as an offering. “You can’t just wait?” he asks, seeming disappointed. “HA!” I point to him with a greasy finger. “You do want something from me. Tell me what it is.” “You’re ridiculous you know that, right? A normal person would wait.” I shake my head. “No, they wouldn’t.” See, this feels good. This feels right. “LUCA!” I scream. He blows out a breath. “Fine. I need a favor from you.”

REVIEW

One of my favorite tropes is the fake relationship/engagement and as expected Piper Rayne pulled it off with their usual humor and fun twists.

As the last book in the series, I was excited to see how this story would play out and how Luca would win me over completely.  I also was looking forward to learning more about Lauren and seeing how their story came together.

As expected with most relationships that start out as fake or set up - things don't work as expected and somewhere along the way the plan falls to the wayside and real life intrudes.  What this meant for Lauren and Luca was a few twists and turns and a bit of adventure that not only grabbed and held my attention but had me wanting more.

This book made an excellent end to the series and fit the couple wonderfully.

“You catching that?” Jase asked, his focus returning to the poster and the tape. “Catching what?” Heather replied. Poster in hand, he moved to the front window and pressed it against the glass, smoothing it before turning back to her. “Catching the little buzz we have going on between us.” “A little… the thing is…” C’mon Heather, be strong. You are the cookie lady now. You don’t date. You are all you need. That’s what the podcast she’d been listening to said to her over and over again. Mantra in hand, she slapped on her I’m-in-charge-here-buddy mask. “It would never work between us.” The edges of his lips ticked up ever so slightly. “You can’t know that.” Oh, she knew. He sauntered toward her. Unwilling to back down, she stepped toward him. Expression firm, she said, “I can already see exactly how this whole thing would play out if we let it. You’d start with a horrible pick up line.” “Guilty.” His hands fell to the belt loops of his jeans. Her palm itched to press against the front of his tee, but she refrained. “Then I’d counter with a witty response. This time my reply would be even better. Funny, intelligent…everything.” “Now, that I’d like to hear.” Nothing but a foot of crackling air sizzled between them. “Trust me, if I had said it, it would have been epic. You can’t repeat something like that. It has to happen in the moment.” She shook her head, the sleek ponytail she’d carefully arranged earlier brushing against the collar of her jacket. “That right there is why we wouldn’t have worked out. I mean you couldn’t even come up with a snappier reply.” He crossed his arms, the little veins of his muscled forearms flexing with the motion. “Oh, I would’ve. It would’ve been the best response in the history of pick-up line replies.” “I don’t believe you.” The glimmer in his eyes lit up his entire face. He was clearly enjoying this exchange entirely too much. Control. She needed the power back. “Trust would’ve always been one of your issues in our relationship.” “Maybe you just couldn’t be honest with me about how you felt. That’s probably why we would have always argued.” He raised his eyebrows in a clear ultimatum. Challenge accepted. She stepped the tiniest bit closer to him. “Let’s say you threw out that awful line again. The one about taking me out.” “I’m with you so far.” He glanced down to the floor in clear acknowledgment of her movement forward, but he held his ground. “We’d banter for a good bit—” His face sparked with humor. “Sounds about right.” “Both of us would get that tingly feeling of attraction. You know the one.” So maybe she made her voice a little breathier than usual. Sue her. His mouth parted, the exaggerated fullness of his lower lip apparent. “You have a tingly feeling?” She shook her head and raised a hand. Not touching his chest like she desperately wanted to but getting within millimeters. “That’s not the important part. Eventually you would convince me to go on a date.” “I’d take you to this great taco stand. I love tacos.” “Despite that, I’d probably let you take me out again. And again,” she said, not willing to acknowledge the way she wanted to nip at his lip with her teeth. He nodded. “I’m digging this relationship so far.” “Eventually, you’d ask me to move in. I’d say no. You’d pressure me, even though I wouldn’t be ready.” “What can I say? I wouldn’t want to spend a night away from you. No use paying for two apartments.” She shrugged, dropping her hand. “I’d cave, and we’d finally move in together—” “Do we get to hook up first? Don’t skip that part.” This time he moved forward. Not a lot, just a smidge. She stayed put. She refused to back up first. “Of course. It would be awful. Sorry Speed Racer, but I need more than three minutes of go-time.” “That’s not what you’d say after you screamed my name.” He leaned forward, the whisper of his words brushing against her ear. God, there wasn’t but a breath of space between them. She was all turned-on Heather, ready to throw her why-have-a-man-when-you-can-have-cookies resolve away. His breath smelled of cinnamon candy and coffee, turning her knees effectively to melted butter. No, she stopped herself. Back to the break-up at hand.

REVIEW

So a while back, SL Scott teased with a short story that ended with a bang and I love that she's added to that and given us the REST of the story. Now, have no fear, if you didn't read that story - you can still 100 percent read Bad Reputation as a stand alone.  Bad Reputation is a tale of second chance romance with a twist.

Bad Reputation is Hutton Everest's story and man is it amazing in all it's unexpected deliciousness. Hutton finds himself having fallen for a woman who left him after an unexpected truth bomb - a woman who believes she can't have him.  But Hutton Everest is not a man who gives up without putting forth his best effort and Hutton is determined that Ally will be his.

Ally's got a lot going on in her life, things she isn't proud of, things she doesn't want to face, and a bundle of emotions that are tearing her a part inside.  Ally finds herself torn between what she feels are her responsibilities and what she craves and truly wants in her life.  Just when she's the most torn - Hutton shows up in her life again and further complicates those feelings.

The characters of Ally and Hutton are both fun and interesting, they'll not only draw you in to their story, they'll have you feeling all the things.  Watch as these two maneuver through obstacles one would never expect of ace on the path to happily ever after and do so with humor and grace and a bit of tension.

S.L. Scott delivers a uniquely fun tale of royal romance within the pages of this book, with bouts of humor, a touch of frustration, and two characters with chemistry that could burn down the palace, Bad Reputation is everything you could ask for and more.

Excerpt

Suddenly, I felt a cold sensation on my upper shoulder, just below my neck. I turned, and Ryan was right behind me. “What was that?”
“I think I accidentally spilled frosting on you. Here.” He traced a path along the top of my shoulder toward my neck, and I involuntarily shivered. In response, his other hand came up and cupped my other shoulder and his head dipped down to land right where he’d put the frosting.
Right there. In that spot. He was licking and sucking, getting every last bit as his hands traveled down my arms, clamping around my elbows to hold me still.
“Accidentally, huh?” I rasped, my voice sounding alien to my own ears. Likely it was my aroused voice. And likely he knew exactly what it meant when I talked this way.
He was an expert at turning me on and doing it quickly. Zero to Mach 5 in seconds flat. Probably easier than flying his training jet. My panties were already wet, and my nipples were painfully hard and probably very visible under my thin tank top.
I cleared my throat. “I, uh.” And cleared my throat again. “Have another batch to do.”
Without a word he reached out and turned off the oven. “Let’s hit pause on that little project for now,” he said in that low, gravelly voice of his. His aroused voice. I knew that voice, too, and it usually seemed in perfect sync with the tight squeezing sensation in my belly and lower that screamed for his hands and mouth—and other parts—to ease the tension and bring release.
“You are a wicked, wicked man.”
“This I already know,” he said between more kisses on the back of my neck that sent electric shocks down my spine and wound that tension deep inside me even tighter.
I spun in his arms, and though I could barely reach it, I managed to scoop up my own dollop of frosting from the edge of the metal mixing bowl. He watched me then raised his brow to ask the unspoken question—where are you going to put that?
My answer? I grabbed the hem of his t-shirt and rucked it up, holding it just below his collar, then liberally spread the frosting across his upper abs. Double yum.
He sucked in a quick breath, and that was enough to get me diving right in. “Mmm. What kind of mess do we have here? Better start cleaning up.”
The frosting was sweet, creamy. Delectable, really. Buttercream was delicious. Buttercream slathered across Ryan’s rock-hard abs? Perfection.

Review

High Reward is book two in the duet and picks us up right where we left off with High Risk.  There's a lot left to sort through including all of the feelings between Gray and Ryan and the past that still haunts Ryan.  This book took us through many emotions and twists and turns, each making me guess how things would end and each making me cling to the next page in anticipation.

I really enjoyed watching the differences in Ryan and Gray - they both have their strengths and their fears. I really did feel like even when I was highly annoyed with Ryan I understood a little where he was coming from even if he was wrong.

Brenna Aubrey did an amazing job of making me feel this story from all angles.  The space aspect, the romance, the torn feelings and everything in between.
