Release Blitz & Review: Fighting Silence by Aly Martinez

Meet Till & Eliza in Aly Martinez’s newest fighter series!

NOW AVAILABLE
 Excerpt
FIGHTING SILENCE
"That wasn't yours to take away," he exploded into the otherwise silent night. His words echoed off the surrounding buildings, each wave slicing me to the quick all over again. "That was our place. Not yours." His voice cracked right alongside my heart.
"Yeah, well, there was a lot of stuff that wasn't yours to take either." I held his gaze, desperately trying to be strong, but as his eyes grew wide, I whimpered.
His long legs strode forward, stopping only inches away from me. He was crowding me, but he still leaned in closer to my face. "There is nothing in this world that was ever more mine than you," he stated. Though it was the absolute truth, I wished with all my heart that it were a lie.
"Till," I cried, swiping the tears from my eyes.
"Why!" he shouted, causing his muscles to tense under the force. "Goddamn it! I needed that place."
Porch lights flashed on from the surrounding apartments, illuminating not only the dark but also my rage.
I shoved my hands into his chest. "What about what I needed? You left! I waited in that fucking apartment for weeks."
He didn't budge, but my bare feet slipped, sending me toward the ground. Impossibly fast, Till's hand snaked out and caught my arm. I didn't let his chivalrous gesture douse my fire. I had six months’ worth of words to say to the man I was irrevocably in love with.
"You took what you wanted. Then you left me."
"Doodle," he whispered.
I had been perilously close to the edge of insanity, and with one single word, he’d pushed me over.
I lost it completely.
Pounding my fists against his chest, I screamed at the top of my lungs, "It's Eliza! My name is fucking Eliza! Not Doodle!" I spun to march away, but Till's arms folded around me, lifting me off my feet to restrain me.
I was miniscule compared to him. There was no use in fighting, but I still kicked my legs, irrationally desperate to get away from him—but only because I knew I couldn't keep him for forever.
"Stop it!" he growled into my ear. "I know your Goddamn name—probably better than I know my own."

Blurb:
Sound is an abstract concept for most people. We spend our lives blocking out the static in order to focus on what we believe is important. But what if, when the clarity fades into silence, it's the obscure background noise that you would give anything to hold on to?
I've always been a fighter. With parents who barely managed to stay out of jail and two little brothers who narrowly avoided foster care, I became skilled at dodging the punches life threw at me. Growing up, I didn’t have anything I could call my own, but from the moment I met Eliza Reynolds, she wasalways mine.  I became utterly addicted to her and the escape from reality we provided each other. Throughout the years, she had boyfriends and I had girlfriends, but there wasn't a single night that I didn’t hear her voice.
You see, meeting the love of my life at age thirteen was never part of my plan. However, neither was gradually going deaf at the age of twenty-one.
 They both happened anyway.
Now, I'm on the ropes during the toughest battles of my life.
Fighting for my career.
Fighting the impending silence.
Fighting for her.
Every night, just before falling asleep, she sighs as a final conscious breath leaves her.
I think that's the sound I'll miss the most.

MY REVIEW:

Till and Eliza have known each other forever and they pretty much fell in love on day one at first sight, but life has proven difficult for both of them.  Neither has had a perfect happy childhood and its hard to grow up and find happiness and show love when you are not used to it.

Till is thrust into life on his own kind of abruptly, and then he adds on the huge task of taking care of his brothers so they don't end up in the system.  Till has other struggles too, like the fact that he will eventually go deaf and there's nothing he can do.  Till finds a release in Fighting, and he devotes himself to it.  He doesn't feel like a relationship with Eliza is going to last, so he tries to walk away.

Eliza has loved Till since the moment they met, and she hasn't really tried to hide it. Eventually she must have definition in their relationship. She's struck out on her own as soon as she legally could, but she never wanted to leave Till behind.

Though they have their struggles, its clear to see how much they mean to each other and how far they are willing to go.

Fighting Silence is full of adventure and pain, struggles, and an acceptance that the future can be better than the past, if you allow it to be.  It is a story of how Love can heal wounded souls and bring a family together.  Eliza and Till have been through a lot in their lives, but the greatest thing was finding each other. Making it work takes strength and understanding and patience, but luckily they are both able to put in the effort.

This story was beautiful and sweet at times, somber at others, but defintiely left me wanting more and waiting for the next in the series.

BLACKEST RED is the passionate and explosive conclusion to the IN THE SHADOWS series

Summary

No matter how hard I’ve tried to let go of Mister Black, the memories of us together torture me. They’re an unforgettable reminder of a life I can’t have for many reasons.

Burying myself in work mostly keeps thoughts of him to a screaming minimum, until he's thrust into my life under circumstances beyond my control. Despite my need for his protection, this time I’m not sure if I’m strong enough to survive with my heart intact.

He is Black: a fierce protector and irresistible charmer.

I am Red: a trouble magnet and rainbow weaver.

Together we ignite. Explosive colors merging at the hottest melting point.

My Review:

We've seen Talia and Sebastian have these hit and misses throughout the last books. They run into each other, help each other and then run away from each other.  Finally Finally, we find out the rest of their story and watch as they start to figure things out.

Blackest Red brings their paths to a certain amount of closure and gets both Talia and Sebastian to admit to themselves and each other that they feared the whole truth coming out.   There is so much action and drama going on that it was hard to put the book down because I needed to know what was coming.

I felt that things were wrapped up nicely in the book, and I was surprised at some things that came out, while not at all surprised at others.  Talia and Sebastian's passion and depth of love really bring the whole series together.

My Review:

When Marcia was a young adult, she made a decision based on intimate knowledge and personal interaction with Brock, to send him on his way out of town for a Baseball career and keep her pregnancy secret.  Since that decision, she's made others as well all in an effort to keep the secret and protect her child.

When Brock comes back to town, intent on picking up a relationship with Marcia, he's a little confused over her behavior towards and seeming hatred of him. Even still he refuses to give up and is determined to prove to Marcia she belongs with him and he's perfect for her.

With the secrets she's hiding, and the fear she holds that Brock may become an abuser like his father before him, Marcia is even more determined to keep him away from both her and their child. Her father, on the other hand, didn't get that memo and is doing everything he can to include Brock in their day to day lives.

Playing Without Rules brings to light some serious issues, dealing with childhood abuse for both the abused and those he has loved. I felt that Marcia was a little harsh in her fear, but I also understood as a mother where she was coming from. There was a major change in Brock from start to finish, and comparing to flashbacks as well, you can definitely see how he's grown and changed and accepted things he couldn't understand as a teen/young adult.  At times the story felt a little rushed, but it came together nicely in the end and I felt that the pain from the past had definitely been healed.
