Review

Scr*w You was a great enemies to lovers story with a touch of a second chance.  Blake and Zach were fabulous characters and their story was a bit unique and fun, while also having just the right amount of steam.

Blake and Zach knew each other back in College and boy did they not hit it off.  Zach was Blake's then boyfriend's best friend and well they didn't quite get along, though neither knew the real reason why.  Fast forward to years later, both are grown and matured and pit against each other for a job working with none other than the man who's been between them from the start.

I really enjoyed how the past and the present collided within the pages of this book, not all at once, but with just hints until finally the truth, so to speak, comes out.  I loved watching as Blake and Zach fought each other and yet couldn't resist the connection developing between them either.  There was just the right amount of drama blended in to keep things from being without obstacles.

This was my first book by Renee Harless and I enjoyed the way she crafted her characters and their story, so I'll definitely look for more books from her in the future.

Author Bio

Renee Harless, her husband, and children live in Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia.  She studied Communication, specifically Public Relations, at Radford University.

Growing up, Renee always found a way to pursue her creativity. It began by watching endless runs of White Christmas- yes even in the summer – and learning every word and dance from the movie. She could still sing Sister Sister if requested. In high school she joined the show choir and a community theatre group, The Troubadours. After marrying the man of her dreams and moving from her hometown she sought out a different artistic outlet – writing.

To say that Renee is a romance addict would be an understatement. When she isn’t chasing her toddler around the house, working her day job, or writing, she delves head first into a romance novel.

Pulling my phone out, I saw Ava had sent several texts. OMG. I found the perfect guy for you. He’s not blonde and he’s really, really tall. A second text followed that. Jojo, this man. I started laughing until I continued on to her third text. I just approached him. Oh no. I was going to kill her. I knew this once I read her fourth and fifth text. He’s single. I’ve confirmed it. He seems like he could be interested in a good time. And he’s nice. I finally responded. What is wrong with you? She replied almost instantly. Nothing. Get over here. I’m still over by the bar. I’ll just make a quick introduction and skedaddle to our reserved area. I let out a sigh. As I walked over, I came up with a game plan. I figured if the guy was hot and seemed nice enough, I could have a drink with him. If not, I’d blame my inability to chat on needing to not ditch my co-workers. When the area of the bar where Ava and I had been sitting earlier came into view, I thought my eyes had to be deceiving me. Ava’s back was to me as she was rambling on about something, likely me, to the man next to her. I had to give her credit. The guy was gorgeous. He wasn’t blonde and he was tall. There was one small problem, though. The man was Lorenzo. I took in a deep breath, let it out, and moved over to her. “…and it’s been a while for her. I just want her to have a good time tonight,” Ava said until she stopped speaking because Lorenzo was no longer paying attention to her. He caught sight of me, ran his eyes over the length of my body until they settled on my face, and never returned his attention to my outspoken friend. Ava noticed he was distracted and turned around to find me standing there. “Here she is,” she declared. “Jojo, this is…I’m sorry, what’s your name?” “Lorenzo.” “Right, sorry,” she muttered. “Jojo, this is Lorenzo. And Lorenzo, this is my friend, Jolie. Everyone calls her Jojo.” I looked to Lorenzo and asked, “Would you excuse us one second?” He gave me a nod. I grabbed Ava’s hand and dragged her a few feet away as she called out to him, “Save her seat!” When we’d moved out of earshot of Lorenzo, I leaned in and seethed, “What did you say to him?” Oblivious to what she’d just done, she was grinning from ear to ear. “First, I confirmed that he wasn’t here with anyone and that he wasn’t meeting anyone. Once I established that he was single and available, I told him, in not so many words, that I had a friend who needed some companionship before we had to buy stock in batteries.” I closed my eyes and stood up straight to pinch the bridge of my nose. “Please tell me you did not do that.” “Jo, have you seen him?” she cried. “That guy is gorgeous. I know you’d prefer to have a relationship, but if that guy can give your hands a break for the night, why not?!” “I know him!” I nearly exploded. She jerked her head back in surprise. “You know that guy and you haven’t hooked up with him?” Just then, a few more of our co-workers had arrived and walked up to us. I took in another deep breath and advised, “I’m going to go deal with the colossal mess you’ve just put me in. I’ll meet up with you in a few minutes.” Ava took off with the girls from work and I turned back to Lorenzo. I was in big trouble.

About A.K. Evans:

A.K. Evans is a married mother of two boys residing in a small town in northeastern Pennsylvania. After graduating from Lafayette College in 2004 with two degrees (one in English and one in Economics & Business), she pursued a career in the insurance and financial services industry. Not long after, Evans realized the career was not for her. She went on to manage her husband’s performance automotive business and drive the shop race cars for the next thirteen years. While the business afforded her freedoms she wouldn’t necessarily have had in a typical 9-5 job, after eleven years she was no longer receiving personal fulfillment from her chosen career path. Following many discussions, lots of thought, and tons of encouragement, Andrea decided to pursue her dream of becoming a writer. Between her day job, writing, and homeschooling her two boys, Evans is left with very little free time. When she finds scraps of spare time, Evans enjoys reading, doing yoga, watching NY Rangers hockey, dancing, and vacationing with her family. Andrea, her husband, and her children are currently working on taking road trips to visit all 50 states (though, Alaska and Hawaii might require flights).

Figures. It was the gorgeous guy I’d seen in the elevator. And here I thought we’d had a little spark. Bennett Fox grinned like he’d already been named my boss and extended his hand. “Welcome to Foster Burnett.” Ugh. He wasn’t just good looking; he knew it, too. “That would be Foster, Burnett and Wren, as of a few weeks ago, right?” I iced my subtle reminder that this was now our place of employment with a smile, suddenly thankful my parents had made me wear braces until I was nearly sixteen. “Of course.” My new nemesis smiled just as brightly. Apparently his parents had sprung for orthodontic care, too. Bennett Fox was also tall. I once read an article that said the average height of a man in the US was five-foot-nine-and-a-half inches; less than fifteen percent of men stood taller than six feet. Yet the average height of more than sixty-eight percent of Fortune 500 CEOs was over six feet. Subconsciously, we related size to power in more ways than just brawn. Andrew was six foot two. I’d guess this guy was about the same. Bennett pulled out the guest chair next to him. “Please, have a seat.” Tall and with gentlemanly manners. I disliked him already. During the ensuing twenty-minute pep talk given by Jonas Stern—in which he attempted to convince us we weren’t vying for the same position, but instead forging the way as leaders of the now-largest ad agency in the United States—I stole glances at Bennett Fox. Shoes: definitely expensive. Conservative, oxford in style, but with a modern edge of topstitching. Ferragamo would be my guess. Big feet, too. Suit: dark navy, tailored to fit his tall, broad frame. The kind of understated luxury that said he had money, but didn’t need to flaunt it to impress you. He had one long leg casually crossed over the other knee, as if we were discussing the weather rather than being told everything we’d worked twelve hours a day, six days a week for was suddenly at risk of being in vain. At one point, Jonas had said something we both agreed with, and we looked at each other, nodding. Given the opportunity for a closer inspection, my eyes roamed his handsome face. Strong jaw, daringly straight, perfect nose—the type of bone structure passed down from generation to generation that was better and more useful than any monetary inheritance. But his eyes were the showstopper: a deep, penetrating green that popped from his smooth, tanned skin. Those were currently staring right at me. I looked away, returning my attention to Jonas. “So what happens at the end of the ninety-day integration period? Will there be two Creative Directors of West Coast Marketing?” Jonas looked back and forth between us and sighed. “No. But no one is going to lose his or her job. I was just about to tell Bennett the news. Rob Gatts announced he’ll be retiring in a few months. So there will be a position opening up for a creative director to replace him.” I had no idea what that meant. But apparently Bennett did. “So one of us gets shipped off to Dallas to replace Rob in the southwest region?” he asked. Jonas’s face told me Bennett wouldn’t be happy about the prospect of heading to Texas. “Yes.” All three of us let that sink in for a moment. The possibility of having to relocate to Texas shifted my mind back into gear, though. “Who will make the decision?” I asked. “Because obviously you’ve been working with Bennett…” Jonas shook his head and waved off what I was beginning to question. “Decisions like this—where two senior management positions are being merged into one office—the board will oversee and make the final determination of who gets first pick.” Bennett was just as confused as me. “The board members don’t work with us on a daily basis.” “No, they don’t. So they’ve come up with a method of making their decision.” “Which is?” “It’ll be based on three major client pitches. You’ll both come up with campaigns on your own and present them. The clients will pick which they like best.” Bennett looked rattled for the first time. His perfect composure and self-assuredness took a hit as he leaned forward and raked long fingers through his hair. “You’ve got to be kidding me. More than ten years, and my job here comes down to a few pitches? I’ve landed half-a-billion dollars of ad accounts for this company.” “I’m sorry, Bennett. I really am. But one of the conditions of the Wren merger was that due consideration be given to the Wren employees in positions that might be eliminated because of duplicity. The deal almost didn’t go through because Mrs. Wren was so insistent that she not sell her husband’s company, only to have the new organization strip away all of Wren’s hard-working employees.” That made me smile. Mr. Wren was taking care of his employees even after he was gone. “I’m up for the challenge.” I looked at Bennett, who was clearly pissed off. “May the best woman win.” He scowled. “You mean man.”

SYNOPSIS:

Bennett Fox walked into my life on one hell of a crappy Monday morning. I was late for the first day at my new job—a job I’d now have to compete for even though I’d already worked eight years to earn it, because of an unexpected merger. While I lugged my belongings up to my new office, a meter maid wrote me a parking summons. She’d ticketed a long line of cars—except for the Audi parked in front of me, which happened to be the same make and model as mine. Annoyed, I decided to regift my ticket to the car that had evaded a fine. Chances were, the owner would pay it and be none the wiser. Except, I accidentally broke the windshield wiper while slipping the ticket onto the car’s window. Seriously, my day couldn’t get any worse. Things started to perk up when I ran into a gorgeous man in the elevator. We had one of those brief moments that only happened in movies. You know the deal…your body lights up, fireworks go off, and the air around you crackles with electricity. His heated stare left me flush when I stepped off the elevator. Maybe things here wouldn’t be so bad after all. Or so I thought. Until I walked into my new boss’s office and met my competition. The gorgeous man from the elevator was now my nemesis. His heated stare wasn’t because of any mutual attraction. It was because he’d saw me vandalize his car. And now he couldn’t wait to annihilate his rival. There’s a fine line between love and hate—and we shouldn’t cross it. We shouldn’t—but straddling that line could be so much fun. WeShouldnt_FullCover

Benson Bayou Beauregard is the president of the Bear Bottom Guardians MC, and the grandson of the Sergeant at Arms for the Dixie Wardens MC. He’s a mountain of a man and the warden of a prison, and there’s only one thing that can scare him—being told that he’s the father of a three-year-old little girl. A three-year-old little girl that has no clue who he is. Hell, he only finds out about the little cherub when a woman from child protective services comes by and rocks his world before leaving the girl in his shocked arms. Every single thing he thinks he knows goes up in a cloud of smoke. To make matters worse, the woman that he’s been trying to convince to give him a chance takes one look at the little girl and tells him that he’s just not in the right place to handle both of them. But Bayou was never one to back down from a challenge. He can handle a three-year-old girl that acts exactly like him, and he can more than take on the fiery red-head that sets flame to his blood while he’s at it. ADD TO GOODREADS

REVIEW

I have been anticipating Bayou's book for a while and I couldn't wait to dive into my ARC copy as soon as I could. As always happens with Vale's books, I was sucked right in and devoured it all in one sitting.

Bayou is not anything like your usual man, he's got his quirks but he's still strong, alpha and determined. Once he sets his mind to something - he follows through - no matter what it takes and I really enjoyed watching how all of that played out in this story.

It was great to see Phoebe get her love story and as always see her family in action yet again as they always add a flair of well drama, humor, all of the above. I really enjoyed seeing another side to Phoebe and really getting to know her and see the woman she is. She was definitely a fun heroine and I really enjoyed her interactions with not only Bayou but also his surprise daughter.

One Chance, Fancy truly pulled me in from page one, kept me intrigued about how things would play out as Phoebe and Bayou found love together and seeing how things worked out with his daughter. As with most of the stories in this series, there is a great balance of mystery and romance, a blend of family and friends and their roles in both of the characters lives pulling me in much further to the story because I have known and loved these characters for a long time and I feel like part of the circle.
