Four years ago losing the love of my life almost destroyed me.

Years of being labeled and looked upon with disdain by everyone in my hometown almost wrecked me.

Four years ago I became a mother and together we were enough...Until I met him.

He wanted to rebuild my broken–I just didn’t know how to let him.

This is my story of how one man’s love changed everything I thought I knew about life, love and myself.

But in the end, can Levi Eddison prove to be my restoration?

Levi

Everything in my world changed the day Braunwyn Daniels walked into my pub.

She was a woman of many contradictions. I recognized the happiness and sorrow each fighting its way to the surface from deep within.

I was drawn to her immediately.

Behind her long legs, chestnut brown hair and beautiful eyes laid a damaged soul.

I needed to change that–I just didn’t know how.

This is my story of how I met a broken girl and vowed to make her whole.

And in the end, it turns out I knew nothing about true happiness until Braunwyn Daniels let me love her.

 Review

On the rocks takes readers on a heart wrenching journey, a journey of surviving, a journey of letting go of guilt and finding the strength to move on and accept that sometimes things happen that are not at all of your doing.  This story touches on serious topics, but does so in a non-confrontational way, I felt.  There are not givens and nothing set in stone, but rather feelings and vague notions that give way to a broader picture but in no way encompass the way things happen for everyone.  It's a brief glimpse of how things could happen.

Braun has struggled for years, practically alone, struggling with guilt and self-blame and a feeling of abandonment by those who should have supported her without question.  She's been lost a bit, and focused on one thing, making a better life for her and her daughter. She's on the verge of getting her dream, at least one of them, just a little stretch longer, but things are smoothing out as well with her daughter starting school and  more time opening up for her to work more steadily, if she can nail down this job interview. Braun has been stuck in grief mode, in guilt mode, in being a single mom trying to make it work mode, and thus hasn't dated or had any type of relationship in years.

Levi is happy with his life. He's got his bar, some loyal employees and has reached what he thought was his dream life. He's had no desire for anything to mess up what he's got.  He's got one problem, needed a few more trusted employees and then life will be wonderful. What he doesn't expect is to find a woman waiting in his office for an interview. A woman who calls to him on an intrinsic level.

Braun also finds herself reacting to Levi in ways unexpected and that haven't affected her in years.  Their feelings were noticeable but not pushed or rushed or overly done.  I liked that there was a build up and it wasn't just instant connection, instant love. There was work to be done.  Fears to overcome, feelings to move past, and a host of other things to work through.

On the Rocks isn't your typical damaged girl story, Braun isn't so much damaged as deeply affected by something out of her realm of control and because of the actions andbehavior of others she shoulders a lot of blame and guilt undeservedly.  This book really draws out an emotional battleground covering a lot of sensitive material, but it handles it beautifully and I was fully engrossed with both heart and mind.

Thanks for taking me on this moving journey, Gillian Jones, this book hit me in places I wouldn't have thought based on the synopsis, I'm so glad I gave it a shot.

Note from the Author

Dear Reader,

Mental illness is a growing concern in our world today. On the Rocks is about surviving the aftermath of suicide, and believing in love again. Levi and Braunwyn’s love story is inspired by events that impacted the lives of people I care about deeply. With all of the research and ongoing concerns with mental health, I’ve decided to try and do something to bring awareness and light to this growing concern. I will be donating 10% of all pre-order and release week profits to Canadian Mental Health Association.
