Blurb

He was my older brother's best friend.
He was never supposed to be mine.
I thought we would get it out of our system and move on.
One of us did.
One of us left.
Now he’s back, looking at me like he wants to devour me. And all those feelings I’d turned into anger are brewing into something else, something that terrifies me.
He broke my heart last time.
This time he'll obliterate it.

Excerpt #1: Meet Oliver & Elle
What’s wrong?” I asked as she wiped her tears and shook her head. Her face was no longer wet, save for the dip over the top of her lips. I’d never noticed how full they were before then. I’d never noticed how rosy and defined her cheekbones were, or the way her eyebrows turned into a slight frown when she looked at me. I’d never paid attention to how ridiculously alluring her eyes were. The different shades made them look like the marbles I used to collect when I was a kid. My gaze drifted down to her neck, where I noticed her swallow, and then over her tits, which were now full, not like the last time I’d seen her in a bathing suit when she was still flat chested. Jesus Christ, this girl was hot.
The clearing of her throat made my eyes snap back to hers, putting an end to their voyeuristic journey down her now grown up body.
“You’re so grown up,” I said before I could stop myself and cringed at the voice I said it in, all needy and husky and fuck my life, desperate. I expected her to roll her eyes, the way she normally did when I said anything to her, but this girl, this freaking girl looked at me and smiled the sexiest smile I’d ever seen. And I had just been at a party full of hot girls smiling, but Elle’s was slow and sensual when she wasn’t trying to make it be. It was just her smile, the one I’d been seeing for as long as I could remember. Putting that smile on this grown up version of her should be down right illegal.
“Are you hitting on me?” she asked, with a sultriness in her voice that surprised the hell out of me.
“That depends,” I said, inching to sit closer to her, somehow completely forgetting that I was in my best friend’s house and this was his little sister. The thought of Vic finding us crossed my mind, but I pushed it down. In that moment, under a sky full of stars with a sad Estelle, all I could think about was making her smile.
“What does it depend on?” she whispered.
“Whether or not it’s working,” I whispered back, lifting my hand and running it down her back, a motion I shouldn’t have done because now I knew Elle wasn’t wearing a bra under the oversized sweater she had on and that knowledge woke up everything in my lower region.

Originally from New England, she now resides in sunny Southern California with her husband, dog and three cats, all of which she has rescued (including the husband). When she’s not planted in front of her computer, writing away, she can be found running and training for her next marathon (of which she has run over fifteen fulls and far too many halfs to recall). Synopsis

The problem with crazy is that crazy, by itself, has no context. It can be good crazy, bad crazy ... or crazy crazy—like it was when my ex-boyfriend sung about me on the radio.

Eighteen-year-old Kate couldn’t be more excited about finishing high school and spending the summer on tour with her boyfriend’s band. Her dad showing up drunk at graduation, however, is not exactly kicking things off on the right foot—and that’s before she finds out about his mystery illness, certain to end in death.

A mystery illness that she could inherit.

Kate has to convince everyone around her that her father is sick, not crazy. But who will be harder to convince? Her friends? Or herself?

The Problem With Crazy is a story about love and life; about overcoming obstacles, choosing to trust, and learning how to make the choices that will change your life forever.

Excerpt

“Nice ass,” a deep voice said. I jumped and quickly straightened up. Heat rushed to my cheeks as my head spun from left to right, trying to identify where the noise had come from.

“Sorry,” the voice came again, only this time I identified its source. A guy stepped out from behind the tree. He was tall, about six foot, with floppy brown hair, olive-toned skin and chocolate-coloured eyes, a tiny freckle marring his right cheek. A small smile was twisted on his lips, showcasing a dimple that made something twinge inside of me.

“You can’t do that.” I frowned.

“If you’re going to bend over in my presence I’m not allowed to compliment you?” The guy stepped forward, closer to me.

“I was stretching.” I shot him what I hoped was a withering look. “And you were hiding behind a tree.”

“I was relaxing behind a tree.” He stepped closer again and I saw the light dancing in his eyes. “But I do realise I might have come across a little sleazy. I meant it as a compliment. You have a great ass. Much better than some of the others I’ve seen around here.”

“You do this all the time?”

“Depends on what you mean by ‘this’.”

“Standing behind trees, and checking out peoples asses.”

Goodreads ~ Amazon

Rachel Ryan wakes up with no knowledge of where she is or how she got there. Thrown into a world she thought only existed in myths, she finds more questions than answers. Shape shifters, faeries, and vampires hide in plain sight among humans. There’s a war quietly brewing in the shadows. Rachel stands between mankind and those creatures that live in the darkness. Enhanced with power she doesn't understand, she’ll tip the scales, but who is the real enemy?

My Review:

First, I have to say that I don't think I've read an introductory book that is quite as WOWing as this one.  Rising Shadows pulls you in from scene one full of question and anticipating outcomes. The world building is almost seamless, each little piece of information given feels like it fits right in.  The mysteries and secrets add to the story and pull you into the the world of the Shadows and encourage you to dive in head first.

When first reading, I worried Rachel would be a character I'd loathe.  She was confused and seemed kind of naive at the start of the book.  That  doesn't last to long though, slowly Rachel comes back to herself.  While she adjusts to her new circumstances, she definitely isn't wallowing in self pity or woe is me. She longs to fight back.

I absolutely love Rachel's snarky sarcasm, It's palatable as her personality. It comes off the pages whether it's in her head or outwitting her captors.  She might be trapped, but she's not giving up or giving in.  It's strong heroines like this that really fit into a paranormal world.

Bastien, sigh, oh Bastien.  I kind of fell in love with him from the get go.  Before he speaks. Before he meets up with Rachel, just the description of his first sighting and I digress. He's a great character, Hard Core Bad Ass when he needs to be, and quite the opposite much of the time, when he so chooses.  He feels an instant connection to Rachel, though that's more something you read into based on his actions throughout their initial meeting and afterwards.

The true nature therianthropy was great, I love how it all ties together.  The different twists to certain things add a unique layer to this World in Shadows.

Rising Shadows introduces a bevy of characters, so its is a lot to take in, but I think that each new character brought up is important and has their place.  From Claude and Madalaina to Cleary to Winter and Varian, you get a feel for how each "species" connects to and interacts with each other in this world.

Though things happen suddenly, the relationship between Bastien and Rachel does not feel forced, rather it is fitting. They continue to grow as a couple throughout the book.

I am fascinated by this new World and look forward to reading more of the books centered in it.  The interactions between certain characters build up quite an anticipation for future stories that I am hopeless to ignore.  If you are looking for a sometimes steamy, often Hilarious, full of Kick Butt Fun characters, look no further than this series.
