What do you do when a sexy, older man moves into your family’s summer rental? Well, apparently, you make a fool of yourself—over and over. Things didn’t exactly get off on the right foot with Noah Cavallari. Our first encounter was embarrassing, to say the least. But despite that, I found myself waking up every day with a newfound energy. Nothing exciting ever happened on the lake—not until Noah moved into the small boathouse on our property. He’d booked it for the entire summer…and I was still trying to figure out why. When my mother became ill, I inherited the responsibility of making sure our guests were well taken care of. I should have been in college. Instead, I was living my best life…as a maid. Dark, handsome, and mysterious, everything about Noah screamed forbidden. I knew he was just passing through town for the summer. I knew he was probably too old for me. Yet, I was drawn to him. Not to mention, he tried to save my life when he mistakenly thought I was drowning. I wanted him and made no secret of it. His own attempts to warn me away soon gave way to late-night moonlight chats by the lake. We were slowly easing into a friendship that was gearing up to explode into something I might not recover from. Because he’s leaving at the end of the summer. And I have no idea what I’ll do when August ends.
When August Ends wasn't quite what I expected from the synopsis and that's because Penelope Ward always manages to throw in a twist to the norm just when I'm least expecting it. This story brings us the tale of love between Heather and Noah - two strangers who find a bond with each other and more.
Heather gave up on her dreams for a while to take care of her mother and her mother's source of income, renting out their boathouse. When a man decides to rent the space for the whole summer, at first she thinks nothing of it, and then she meets him and things couldn't go worse. After embarrassing herself and upsetting her guest, she's not sure how things will go but for some reason she's drawn to the man.
Noah came to the boathouse for a reason, and it was more than just getting away from his daily life and letting go of the past. But Noah didn't expect what he was going to find on this journey, nor did he expect a young woman who couldn't be less shy about her attraction to him. But Noah has to push her away for his own reasons until he just can't anymore.
When August Ends dives us deep into some emotional things, where Noah and Heather have to face experiences they don't necessarily want to and admit some scary truths to each other. But they find that together they can handle things better than they expected and though there are a few bumps in their road, they find their way together.
I loved watching as Heather tried to figure out what she wanted with her future, things she'd thought out of her reach, Noah helped bring to her. The banter between these two was fun, when they'd do or say something wrong or unexpected and the other would react - it really showed a genuine bond forming between them even when they thought there shouldn't be one.
Ward touches on some serious issues within the pages of this book, but does so in a manner that it flows with the rest of the story and connects with not only the main characters but those around them. It also gives a glimpse into the reality some people face with these issues and how it's not the end of the world to face. There's a lot of love and devotion on Heather's end and its beautiful and strong. Noah feels a lot of guilt weighing him down, but as the story progresses, we see him let go of a lot of that.
