Author: Carrie Aarons
Genre: Contemporary Romance

Blurb

You know how Cinderella had the whole glass slipper, pumpkin carriage, fairy godmother thing?

Yeah…with foot-destroying stilettos, Uber, and a Twitter horoscope, my life is far from a happily ever after.

In fact, instead of Prince Charming, I end up dating every slimy, scaly, brainless frog in the kingdom of Manhattan. And by frog, I mean all of the stereotypical bad guys that Mom and Lifetime movies warned you about.

The meathead player.
The mommy's boy.
The namedropper.
The cheapskate.

If they suck at relationships, I’ve probably kissed those cold, clammy lips in the hopes of finding love. Until one day, when one man with commitment issues offers to help me find the Romeo to my Juliet.

But what happens when the frog, who was never supposed to turn into a prince, kisses you at midnight? Ok fine, he propositioned me for some afternoon delight after brunch, but not everything can be straight out of a fairytale.

Review

One of the things I love about Carrie Aaron's writing is that it always sucks me in. The characters intrigue me and grab my attention and the plot always has a different feel to it than similar reads.

I enjoyed this book because though it had a few common themes and expected things - there was a touch of a different spin on it, making me enjoy the ride.  The banter and interactions between Gemma and Oliver just made the story.

This book gave truth to the old adage - Love comes unexpectedly for some. Gemma and Oliver were two people not many would imagine being perfect for each other, but somehow they just worked.  I enjoyed that their journey wasn't typical, that the story had drama, humor, interesting characters and a story that hooked me from page one and kept me curious for more.

All the Frogs in Manhattan was a light read that had a bit of everything and took me on an interesting journey. Labeled as a romantic comedy this book has its touches of humor, but there's so much more to their relationship.

Blurb
Lucas Thorn wasn’t born a cheater. All it took was a single moment—say, a certain disastrous incident on the night before his wedding—and boom. Reputation destroyed forever and always. So now he owns it. He has a lady friend for every night of the week (except Sundays—God’s day and all), and his rules are simple: No commitments. No exceptions.

But a certain smart-mouthed, strawberry blonde vixen is about to blow that all to hell.

Avery Black has never forgiven Lucas for cheating on her sister. And suddenly being forced to work with him is pretty much a nightmare on steroids. Of course, it does afford her the opportunity to make his life as difficult as possible. But no good revenge scheme comes without payback. Because he didn’t become the Lucas Thorn without learning a few things about women.

Now Avery’s lust for vengeance has turned into, well, lust. And if Lucas stops cheating, it’s definitely not because he’s falling in love…

Excerpt

The office building loomed ahead of me. I squinted up at it, covering my face with part of my hand as the sun cast its glare against the glass.
“What are we looking at?” Lucas whispered in my ear.
I let out a little yelp and jumped away from him, and I would have run into a passing biker if Lucas hadn’t pulled me out of the way with his coffee-free hand.
“Must you be such a pain in the ass?”
“Must you try to kill me?” I fired back.
He rolled his eyes. “Let’s go.” He started walking, hauling me with him.
We weren’t walking in the direction of the office.
“Um, Thorn—”
“I will seriously shove this Starbucks up that skinny ass if you don’t stop talking and just listen for once in your life.”
I shut up and followed, but only because he’d said “Starbucks” and was very purposefully moving in the nearest outpost’s general direction. If I looked pathetic enough, would he buy me coffee?
That was what my life was coming to.
Pity coffee.
My shoulders slumped at the thought when we walked into the building. The smell of fresh baked goods hit me with full force, and my stomach growled loudly, saying to everyone, I’m a hungry bear and may eat my young. Out of the way, please!
I followed Lucas to the line, still tempted to speak, but I figured if he wanted noise from me, he’d say something like, “You may grace me with your voice now, Avery.”
Even though I wasn’t talking, every time I heard someone order pumpkin bread I sighed, loudly, so loudly that the barista eyed me cautiously. Chill, Starbucks, I’m not going to steal a piece of pumpkin bread.
My mouth watered.
I mean, I wasn’t that desperate.
But if I took two, maybe three, steps toward her, yelled “Fire!” and then screamed nonsense about a bee attacking me, the pumpkin bread she had in hand would probably fall to the ground, and it would be wasteful if I didn’t rescue it from the ants.
All creatures deserve food—but pumpkin bread was too good for ants, too rich, and they’d explode all over the floor from the richness and it would be my fault—for saving the barista’s life, right? From the bee?
I think I just confused myself.
“Why are you breathing so heavy?” Lucas asked from my right.
I snapped out of my pumpkin-bread daydream and shrugged. “Sorry, low on sleep.”
He gave a noncommittal nod and then it was his turn, greedy little bastard already had one coffee now he was getting two! “A venti macchiato and a large coffee with room for cream, two slices—”
I elbowed him hard in the ribs.
“Sorry, um, three slices of pumpkin bread, thanks.”
He handed the barista his card, while my greedy eyes locked on the pumpkin bread as the barista placed it into a bag and gave it to him.
With an exasperated sigh, he shoved the bag into my hands. “Just leave me one bite.”
“No promises.” I was already digging into the bag, my mouth watering as I followed him around the counter with a little pep in my step.
Lucas grabbed our drinks and motioned toward one of the tables. I sat, stuffed more pumpkin goodness into my mouth, and managed to chug some coffee almost all at once.
Lucas shook his head. “I always forget how seriously you take your pumpkin bread.”
I moaned and took another huge bite. “My theory is this.”
He leaned forward, a smile curving around his gorgeous mouth. “Alright, out with it.”
More pumpkin bread found its way into my mouth as I talked—I didn’t even care if I looked like a starved animal. “Pumpkin bread has the same addictive properties as cocaine.”
“That’s your theory? That it’s a drug?”
“Right.” I sighed and leaned back. “Except it doesn’t make you skinny, unfortunately.”
His smile widened, and he grabbed a small hunk of bread. “Want to know my theory?”
“Yes, that’s exactly what I was thinking—I hope Lucas tells me his theory so I can eat his portion of bread.”
Lucas scooted the bag toward me and whispered, “Merry Christmas.”
“Oh, pumpkin gods.” I moaned again.
His eyes darted to my mouth.
“What?” I wiped my lips. “Is something on my face?”
“No.” He looked away. “So my theory is this . . . pumpkin flavoring is a conspiracy by the government to see how many ways we can market a flavor and make money off it.”
“Boo.” I gave him a thumbs-down. “Thanks, grinch. Oh, and stop ruining holidays.”
He smirked. “You’ve known forever that Santa isn’t real. Still doesn’t stop you from leaving him cookies every Christmas Eve, then sneaking downstairs and eating them all by yourself.”
“One”—I held up a finger—“it’s genius because nobody will touch them for fear that I’ll get mad. Two”—I held up a second finger—“when everyone else is sad about the Christmas cookies being gone, I know I’ll have them all to myself. It’s like . . .” I sighed, “. . . a Christmas present. To myself.”
“Except for that one time.” He smirked.
“Cruel man.” I glared at him. “How dare you eat my cookies?”
He shrugged. “They were sweet.”
Was it hot? In this little Starbucks? By the window where the sun was searing me alive like I was under a magnifying glass?
I tugged at my sleeveless blouse.
“About Saturday . . .”
Uncomfortable conversation, here we come! I strapped in and waited for the inevitable. And then realized, to my dismay, that he’d just bought me coffee and food without letting me go to the office.
My eyes filling with tears, I shook my head a few times. “Lucas, I may give you crap, but I really need this job.”
He frowned, like he was confused.
“Don’t say another word.” I held out my hands. “I’ll do anything, Lucas—and I mean anything—to keep this job. I wasn’t kidding when I said my parents were chomping at the bit to get me to move home, and I don’t want to. It’s not just about me being defiant; they want me to take over the family business.”
Lucas burst out laughing and then sobered. “Oh, you’re serious.”
“I can’t sell chicken, Thorn.”
“I mean, to be fair, Avery, your parents own a very lucrative organic meats company. I’m sure they could offer you at least five figures.” His smile was way too smug, but I still had to be nice to him rather than throw him off a cliff, because he could fire me.

Review

Anyone who knows me knows I'm not a big fan of cheating in books. It has made me DNF books or made me want to throw my kindle, but with an occasional few, I accepted it for what it was and still found myself enjoying the book.  So when I read the synopsis of this book before it came out, and knowing my love for RVD books, I knew I had to give it a shot. I'm so glad I did because this book was not at all what I expected.

First I'll start with Lucas, there was something about him, even when he was making me mad, even when I wanted to smack him or yell, there was something there that I couldn't turn my back on him, something deeper, something that called to me and drove me to dive deeper and try to figure him out.  I loved that about this book, that even though I saw the bad parts, that there was still some tangible piece of him that wasn't completely tainted.  That's what drove me to keep reading the story and fall deeper into the character of Lucas.

Avery was my favorite type of heroine, Sassy, funny, and ultimately the kind of girl I'd want for my best friend.  She wasn't perfect by any means and definitely had her own issues, but she was real and relatable.

I loved the interactions between Avery and Lucas, how they just sort of seemed to fit together even when they shouldn't have.  There is a lot of wrong within the pages of the book, but somehow even with all of that the story still works and fits the characters.  I really enjoyed the way Rachel Van Dyken pulled the story together and showed us not only the past, but also the present for both of these characters and how thier paths crossed and that sometimes things aren't what they seem at first glance.

I really liked that though I had an inkling of what to expect, the story did not at all meet those expectations, it surpassed them and ended up surprising me.  Going into the story, I wasn't sure I would end up enjoying it or liking the characters as much as I did, and that's what I love about the writing of this book, it really pulled me in and compelled me to dig deeper, to read more to figure out what was below the surface; and of course to fall in love with Avery and Lucas as they worked through their own fall.

I enjoyed the unique take on romance tropes that RVD employed in this book and though unexpected it really worked for me and I look forward to future books in this series to see what other surprises the author has in store.

Blurb
Jude

I faked my way long enough by keeping my mouth shut, painting a fake smile on my face and focusing hard on my job.
I quit going out to find that random piece of ass.
Not a one of them would stand up to her anyway.
She hates me, loathes me even.
Little does Vivian Shepard know I’ve got more tricks up my sleeve than she will ever begin to imagine to get her to change her mind, to get my chance.
I’m not giving up.
I want her, and by God, I’ll fight as dirty as I can get to have her.
No matter what!

Vivian
Of course, I knew it was a one- night stand.
It’s was the perfect night before all hell broke loose to be quite honest.
Drinking, talking and flirting.
One I relished in as I tried to gravitate my mind back to solid ground after soaring so high I could feel the rush of flying.
My stomach dipped, my heart fluttered, and my toes curled inward and then I splattered to the hard surface of the ground.
Jude Westbrooke opened his big fat mouth.
He ruined it, ruined me, ruined it all.

“We need to talk.” I finally manage to pull away from her. My eyes are diverting from her mouth to her soaked t-shirt. “Fuck,” I snarl. Her pink nipples are standing out against the wet fabric, which is white and very thin. My gaze darkens the further south it goes, down to her tiny little pink and white shorts that are saturated. Rivulets of water are dripping down her long, toned legs, dripping off her silky skin to mix with the giant puddle on the floor.
“You look absolutely beautiful, Red.”
“What in the hell are you doing here, Jude? It’s a monsoon out there. And what gives you the right to barge into my house and attack me like that, anyway? Have you lost your mind?” She shoves me back a step and climbs off the counter, nearly falling on her ass in the process. Slippery when wet, baby! The spell is broken.
“I didn’t lose my mind. You fucking stole it. I can’t stop thinking about you, and no matter what you try and say, I know damn well you don’t want me to. So we are talking, goddamn it!” I yell.
“Well, that sure didn’t sound like talking to me. And take your mind back. I don’t want it.” Liar.
“No, darling, it wasn’t talking. What that was, was several months of pent-up frustration over wanting more of what you gave me the night we met. What that was, was me telling you that I’m not a man who walks away from something he knows is rare. You want to give me my mind back, then let me give you something more to stew about in that pretty head of yours. You are so full of shit if you think for one second I’m buying the piss-ass excuse that you don’t want me. And before your head gets all rattled and you start spewing more of your shit, I’m not talking about sex, Vivian. I’m talking about you. The woman I know is in there, but is too fucking stubborn to let the best side of her out. I want that woman. The woman I met before I fucked shit up. The woman I want to ask out on a date. So, you know what? I’m here to tell you that once you decide to let that woman emerge, you give me a call.”
I turn to leave and grab the door handle. I’m so fucking mad she isn’t trying to stop me like she should that I could spit nails into this door. Hammer this goddamn thing shut.
“I’m telling you right the hell now, Vivian, that if you don’t call me, then you are wasting what I know for a goddamn fact would be the greatest gift given to me, which is you.”

REVIEW

Jude is book two in the Saints series and brings us the story of Jude and Vivian.  Though this is book two, it can be read as a stand alone if you haven't read book one yet.  Jude and Vivian's story is one of second chances.

Jude and Vivian had an amazing night together, one that was ruined when Jude opened his mouth and said the wrong thing; leaving Vivian hating him and changing her outlook.  Worse than that something else happened that took them apart from each other for months.

During the six months she was away Vivian worked on herself, not just the physical work she needed, but also she tried to work on her emotional needs.  She tried to make peace with her feelings for Jude, the mix of hate and caring, the man she knew and the man she read about.  But in the end, her feelings remained as jumbled as they were when she first left.

During that same six month period, Jude also made changes in his life, he stopped looking for hookups, he didn't let on his true feelings, and he thought long and hard about what to do to get back into Vivian's life and good graces.  He knows what he wants and he knows he's got a lot to make up for to get it, but he's determined to find a way to make it happen.

Jude takes us on a wild ride as these two navigate the path they are on together. I was pulled into the story from page one, excited to see how Jude was going to win Vivian over and prove to her that he sincerely regretted hurting her and knew that she was the one for him.  I loved that Jude refused to give up, that he wasn't going to back down, and I also enjoyed that Vivian wasn't a weak woman who gave in and accepted things just because but rather she was feisty and sassy and made Jude work for it.  I loved the push and the pull between these two, that deep connection that they both felt, but they didn't always want to admit to.

Their relationship wasn't all flowers and good times, and it wasn't always a smooth path, there were misunderstandings and other things to work through, but with each word on the page, their love was clear and it made the journey so much more fulfilling because it was real.  Their story is ripe with steamy moments, a bit of drama and angst and a touch of everything in between.  I loved Jude's revelations to himself about waht Vivian does to him, what she means to him, how he wants to share it with her at the same time not wanting to whisper a single word of it.

EXCERPT

“It’s art, the same thing you have all over the house, except on canvas.” “Where it belongs,” Connor said exasperated. “Children draw on the walls, Evelyn.” What bit of anger was in her expression melted away, leaving a deep hurt in its place. A part of Connor regretted what he’d said almost instantly, but the other part of him knew it was true. He understood that it was the same way for Evelyn, too. A large part of her was all woman—adult, grown, and a wee bit insane. But there was still a part of her that was a wee child, stuck in a time before all the terrible things had happened to her. “That was uncalled for,” she said. Connor scowled. “Drawing on the walls is uncalled for.” “You’re just parroting things back to me.” “Because I’m the one making sense, lass!” Evelyn’s green eyes rolled upwards. “Whatever, I’m finishing the feather, and it’s staying. It’s not like it’s fucking ugly or something.” Connor eyed the feather, silently agreeing. It was a beautiful image, even if the majority of it was only the barebones of the drawing. Mostly blacklines forming what would be before all the color was added in. She had added some color toward the top, gentle strokes of metallic color that melted with other colors, and shimmered under the kitchen pot lights. He was sure once the light came in from the morning through the windows, the color would sparkle even more. It was amazing. He wouldn’t deny that. But on his kitchen wall? Surely they had better things to be doing and talking about other than drawing on walls? “You can keep the feather,” Connor said heavily. It pained him to do so. “You didn’t have a choice.” Feck. “But,” he added, “no more on the walls.” Her head turned, showing off her beautiful profile as her lips pursed. “The ceilings are okay, then. I get it.” Connor had the strangest urge to smack himself in the face. “No.” “We’ll see.” “Evelyn—” “You’re no fun,” she said rather grumpily, tossing her package of markers to the nearby table. Shooting him with another one of her glares, she headed towards the sink, grabbing a glass from the cabinet as she passed. “I thought you would like it.” Connor didn’t know how to respond to that. “I do.” “Then why be an ass about it?” He chose to stay silent and think about his words as she poured a glass of water, and drank it down in her own silence. He walked forward, stopping at the kitchen island just as she set her now empty glass into the sink. “I will buy you whatever size canvas you want,” Connor said. “And then you’ll hang them on the walls that I could have just drawn on anyway,” she deadpanned. “Don’t you see how that’s a little ridiculous?” “No, what’s ridiculous is you drawing on the walls.” “Connor.” “Evelyn.” “It’s pretty,” she whined, waving at it. “It is—it’s great. You should let me copy it over and tattoo it up your hip and side. It’d look grand, love. It’ll even match the wings on your back. But not on the walls.” Evelyn frowned. “I thought you would like it.” “I said I do.” “Not enough.” All right. Now this was getting rather dumb. Connor was all for indulging Evelyn at times, even some of her more … eccentric moods, when they came on. Which he was learning could be at any point, as she’d spent so much time being forced to do the bidding of a man. This was too far. “Don’t go acting like a right wagon about all of this,” Connor said, turning to walk out of the kitchen and go find something else to do. “I’m not asking for something feckin’ crazy here just that you don’t draw on my goddamn walls, Evelyn.” “What does that even mean?” Connor, more exasperated than he was willing to admit, didn’t bother to turn around as he asked, “What?” “Wagon. What does that even mean?” If there was a God above, He was laughing at Connor. Laughing at his foolish arse. The Irish had a terrible way of taking the English language and mutilating it for their own benefit, however they saw fit. Sometimes shite didn’t make sense, not that it had to outside of the person using it or the person being insulted, but none of that mattered in the grand scheme of things. It was not as simple as saying the phrase meant one thing, when in fact, it could mean a lot of things. This happened to be one of those times, but he figured it was self-explanatory. Evelyn had enough Irish in her to look the part, with her green eyes, pale skin, reddish-blonde curls, and freckles every which way he looked. The sad thing was, life had practically stripped her of the nuances and culture, which was a feckin’ shame. “Means you’re being trite, grumpy, or bitchy—take your pick. Whichever one fits, Evelyn.” Connor only heard the clang of metal in just enough time to turn around and watch something fly at his feckin’ head. Sweet Jesus, she had one hell of an aim on her. He ducked, and the frying pan practically skimmed the top of his hair before it crashed into the floor just outside of the kitchen. It took him all of three seconds to stare at Evelyn, check behind him where the frying pan was now laying, and then back at the crazy woman standing behind the island to realize what had even just happened. As shocked as he was, he was also pissed, and amused. All five feet, four inches of Evelyn stared him down from across the kitchen like she was daring him to say something or move an inch. He swore he saw her hand twitch, too, like she was considering reaching for another one of the hanging pans to whip at him. No, the wee thing didn’t sound Irish at all. She didn’t understand him sometimes, and he got a chuckle out of it more often than not. She was a wee bit insane—he sort of liked that, too. But standing there like she was, pink-cheeked, huffing, and ready to whip his arse even if she had to use a frying pan to do it, she was every inch an Irish lass. Every feckin’ inch. It turned him on like nothing ever had. He wasn’t even sure how to deal with that. A smart man—a frightened man—would have turned tail, and run from the angry woman in his kitchen, knowing he’d pushed her too far and he wasn’t going to get anything good from her tonight. Connor was apparently neither of those things, and he was going to blame that on his damn heritage, too. A stubborn bastard, of course. “Did you just throw a pan at me?” Connor asked. Evelyn spluttered in her anger before spitting out, “You called me a child and bitchy.” “I said ‘pick one.’” “And I picked one. A pan, I mean.” “You could have killed me.” “Probably not. I think your skull is too thick for that.” “Now you’re just trying to piss me off,” Connor said, his jaw clenching. “Is it working?” “Throw another pan at me, lass, and I’ll paddle your arse until its good and red, and you’re begging to be allowed to apologize.” That was his one warning. He’d given it. She could make of it what she wanted. Evelyn’s gaze narrowed. “Is that a promise?” “Don’t do it again, Evelyn.” And now his feckin’ cock was hard, so feck this whole goddamn day right to hell. Figuring his warning was enough, Connor headed out of the kitchen without a look back. A cold shower was in his very near future to get his lust under control. He hadn’t even gotten out of the entryway before she threw the second pan. God save me, he thought. Connor turned back around. Evelyn’s eyes widened, her mouth falling open with an audible pop as Connor stalked toward her. “Wait—wait, what are you doing?” “Oh, you know damn well what I am going to do, lass.”
