Excerpt of PUSH by Claire Wallis

Ten minutes after I finish unloading the groceries, there is a knock on my door. Even though I know it is David, I peer out the peephole before I open it.

"Hey," he says, with both hands in his pockets now.

"Hey," I say. "Everything okay?" He looks a little shaken. Or maybe I am just overly sensitive because of last night's online revelation. I don't know.

"Yeah. Everything's fine," he says with resignation. "I was just talking to Carl. We’re thinking of moving our poker game to different digs, and he isn't happy about it. That’s what Brad and I had to deal with yesterday. Carl can't fucking stumble home drunk if we go to this new place. He's such an ass."

"Yeah, I only met him twice, but he definitely set off my ass alarm. I can spot them a mile away."

David's face lightens immediately. "Ass alarm, huh? Is that like Gay-dar?"

"Yeah, kinda. Only an ass alarm is far more valuable. Keeps out the riffraff." I am smiling now, and David's head sinks to his chest and shakes back and forth. I think he is laughing at me, and frankly, I deserve it. Ass alarm. God, I am a loser.

"Good to know you've got one of those. I'll have to watch myself," he says, raising his head. "I guess all those shitty-ass boyfriends you had really lit it up, didn’t they?"

"Like a goddamned Christmas tree."

He is grinning again and shaking his head. I turn around and walk back into my apartment. I hear him follow me and close the door behind him.

"So, we still on for dinner tonight?" he asks. "You wanna just stay in and get some pizza or something?"

"Sure," I say, stopping short of the kitchen and turning to him, "and maybe we can watch one of the hundreds of man movies you've got up there. It was like a big box of testosterone. I grew hair on my chest just looking at them." I am teasing him, and I'm not quite sure how he is going to take it.

"Hair on your chest, huh? You should check out the other box of movies I've got up there. They'll make your hairy chest blush." Ahhh, so he does have a box of porn. I knew it.

"I doubt it. My brothers got the best of me already on that front. I stopped blushing at porn when I was eleven."

I don't think David knows what to say in response to my remark, so instead of talking, he comes over, wraps his arms around me, and kisses the top of my head. He holds me like this for a minute or two, then lets go and steps back.

"I'm sorry," he says.

We spend the evening eating pizza and watching Dirty Harry. When the movie is over, we sit on my couch, talking. We talk about our favorite movies, our middle names and our mutual love of Cheetos. David makes me laugh. Makes me feel at home. Makes me feel comfortable in my own company. There is something about him that is so real, so solid. He is soothing, which sounds utterly ridiculous, but I don't know how else to describe his temperament. I feel natural talking to him. It is genuine and sincere. And even though I am looking for sorrow, I don't see a single hint of it. At least not when he is with me. He is right. We are pretty great together.

BLURB FOR PUSH:
I feel like I am wrapped in a cyclone. Everything is whirling around me, drawing the air out of my lungs and filling me with the best kind of turmoil. Every time his tongue slides against mine, a prickle in my gut tells me how right we are together. How much I need David. How much I need us.
I hope the cyclone never stops.

Book 2: PULL released Nov. 2014 as well.

Book Blurb:
***PULL is the continuation of Claire Wallis' sharp and shocking debut novel, PUSH. It is the second book in the series and is not intended to be a standalone.***

"It is impossible for someone like me—someone with a sin-list capable of wrapping itself around the world—to find redemption. To be repaired."

David Calgaro has secrets, and the only woman he's ever loved is about to pay the ultimate price to protect them. He's spent a lifetime searching for purpose and control. And the only place he's managed to find them is in a single, perfect moment; a moment in which he has absolute control over someone else's life.

David is unredeemable, unfixable, unsalvageable. But Emma Searfoss has forced a tiny sliver of hope to penetrate his soul. Hope that, even though redemption is impossible, maybe life isn't. Maybe he isn't who he thought he was. Maybe he's meant to be more.

About the Author:
Claire Wallis has penned hundreds of magazine and newspaper articles over the last ten years, with science playing the lead role in almost all of them. Though non-fiction writing will forever be her first love, fiction has unexpectedly swooped in, hooked her by the soul, and become her true love. As a result of this coup d’état, Claire’s writing career has made a complete U-turn, and instead of rocks, plants, insects, and microbes, she is now putting human characters in the lead.

Claire’s previous jobs include working at a limestone quarry, hawking vegetables at a farmer’s market, clerking at the dollar store, and convincing new mothers that they need to renew their subscription to that parenting magazine in order for their child to survive. She lives in Pennsylvania with her amazingly awesome husband and son.

Blog Tour & Review: Consumed by J.C. Hannigan

Title: Consumed
Author: J.C. Hannigan
Released: December 15, 2014
Source: ARC from author
Links: Amazon ~ Goodreads

Consumed is at a special 1.99 price for a limited time, be sure to snag it before the price changes.

Summary:

He's tall, dark, and deliciously handsome. Not exactly what Harlow is looking for. Her heart's still stuck on Iain Bentley. But it's been a painful struggle since she last saw him. Two years of silence and wondering; of desperate sleepless longing. And Jax Walker is a hard man to resist. Just as she's prepared to open herself to new love, Harlow's whole world is thrown into a painful spiral.

My Review:

Consumed brings us to two years after Collide.  Harlow is in college, working hard towards her degree and finding out where she wants to go with her life.  She's still close with Jenna, living together with roommates. She hasn't heard a word from Iain and though she's sort of sworn off all men, she finally meets one who turns her insides a bit with interest.

In dealing over the last two years with no closure from Iain, Harlow has worked through things herself. She's matured a lot and come to understand things she didn't really see before.  It was interesting to watch as Harlow kind of unfolded things and how she was able to see things from a different light and change her overall take-away from the past.

Consumed brings Harlow back to other parts of her past she hasn't found closure with, and its true what they say, some demons will take their bite out of you and go away, others linger haunting you when you least expect it.

I really enjoyed, how J.C. Hannigan pulled this story together.  She shows us how mature and grown up Harlow has become in comparison to how she was in Collide.  Harlow has processed and come to terms with a lot from her past and the changes are evident as the story goes on.

It’s a New Adult Christmas Rafflecopter:

Amber

When I was younger, and believed in Santa, I would wake up at four every Christmas morning. I would then sneak into Michael’s room, and we would tiptoe downstairs to check out the presents Santa had left while we slept. I never had to wake my brother. He was always waiting for me.

Like the little girl I used to be, I wake to find my alarm clock glowing 4:00 a.m. While I’m no longer the girl with the brother eagerly waiting for her, I’m still the girl who sneaks downstairs to peek at her gifts.
And in this case, Marcus.

We haven’t had a chance to be intimate since he arrived less than forty-eight hours ago, beyond small, chaste kisses or hugs. After almost losing him, I’m happy we can have even those. But they haven’t been enough to stop my nightmares.

The only sound greeting me as I creep downstairs is the soft thud of my bare feet against carpeted steps, and the slight rustle of my pink satin robe. Underneath is one of my gifts to Marcus: matching pink satin panties and bra.

The soles of my feet touch the cold tile floor and I pause. Once I’m positive Mom’s mom senses haven’t kicked in, and she’s realized what I’m up to, I tiptoe toward the guest room and inch the door open. The room is dark, other than the faint glow from the Christmas lights next door.

As my eyes adjust to the darkness, I spot Marcus sleeping. I stand in the doorway, wondering how I got so lucky. If I hadn’t been failing my math class last term, I might never have given him a chance. A chance to prove he’s more than the sexed-up guy everyone assumes he is. While I might not be thrilled that so many girls on campus are intimately familiar with his body, a warmth floods through me at the thought that he’s mine.

“Are you planning to stand there staring at me,” Marcus murmurs, “or did you have something else in mind?” His tone is teasing and edged with a desire to do things to my body. Things that will leave me beyond satisfied. My breath hitches and I struggle not to melt away.

BLURB
This shouldn't be happening again...

Amber Scott thought her screaming nightmares would end now that her stalker is locked up and awaiting trial. But they return when her slam-dunk case starts to fall apart. Explicit letters she allegedly wrote surface, suggesting she was the mastermind behind her assault, a willing victim.

Amber only feels safe in the arms of her boyfriend Marcus, the one person she can lean on. Until damning evidence from Marcus's past collides with the case and the media circus drags them both down. To protect Amber's reputation, Marcus has only one option: end their relationship. He won't risk further damage to her case, even if it means breaking her heart.

Amber has to find the strength to step into the spotlight and bring awareness to victims' rights before she's convicted in the court of public opinion. And she's really not sure what's worse—that her kidnapper could walk free, or that the seemingly endless attention and speculation will drive Marcus away permanently...

See how it all began for Amber and Marcus in Tell Me When.

Excerpt:
I looked into Carly’s honest eyes and everything stilled. The anger, the fight, the hatred, it was all gone. I felt stripped and raw and worse, desperate. A needy, crawl-up-her-body-and-lose-myself desperate. What the fuck was happening to me? I wasn’t supposed to fall for a woman. I couldn’t need a woman. I used women. I used them before they used me then I moved on. Fuck them and leave. That’s how you survived. Women were shit and I was nothing. Nothing couldn’t get broken by a woman. But this? This fucked-up desperation could.
“Come inside with me,” she pleaded with the temptation of everything I knew was wrong for me.
Drunk, stupid, I didn’t walk away. I trailed my fingers down her cheek. “I wanted to kiss you this morning.”
She didn’t flinch. “I know.”
I threaded my hand up the back of her neck. “You pulled away from me.”
“I know.”
I twisted my fingers into her hair. “I still want to kiss you.”

Turning her face, she exposed the smooth skin of her neck. “Please, don’t.”

My Reviews:

Broken Communications by Mandy Roth:

Broken communication kicks off the new immortal outcasts series.

Broken Communication is Casey and Harmony's story. Casey has been hiding for years, like the other outcasts in his position. But witth Harmony vanished, he's about to do whatever it takes to find her and get her back.

Harmony, is no wilting flower, she's full of sass, and does a lot toward taking care of herself. But this is one situation, she needs some back up for.

Casey and Harmony's story has a touch of everything important, a dash of suspense, a sprinkle of humor, A kick but Alpha male, and a stubborn but witty female.

Broken Communication is a wonderful start to a new spin off series, I can't wait to read more about the rest of the outcasts.

Determined Prince by Michelle Pillow:
I love this new spin off of the Dragon/Var world. It's a more modern approach and it is quite hilarious. Kyran and the rest of the princes enter Earth looking for a bride (or more) to take back to their planet. Unfortunately for them, they don't really have up to date information on how to fit in with humans and the planet Earth in general which leads to several laugh out loud moments.

When you are not giggling over their lack of earth knowledge, you will be rooting for Kyran and Eve to work things out and become the married couple they should be.

I love how Michelle shows us how things were in the way past and how things have changed in the newer versions of this "universe", the other Dragon/Var series books. It is interesting to see what things have stayed the same, and what has changed.

As always, the characters have ability to suck you into the story and keep you guessing as to what hilarious mishap may come next.

Performance Criteria by Reagan Hawk:

Aeron is a scientist, and when her best friend is injured, she uses her brains and science to piece him back together, however, it doesn't go how she planned.  Aeron wasn't counting on her creation having feelings, much less loving her.

Brad has loved Aeron for years and will do nothing to stop at showing her they can have a future and doing everything to give her the future she wants and deserves.

This story was a sweet tale of science fiction meets romance.

Falling for the Firefighter by Shelli Stevens:

Falling for the Firefighter is a story about Kim and Lucas.  They meet for the second time, when he responds to a fire in her home.  Though he recognizes her almost immediately, she has a vague notion she knows him, but can't remember details.

Both Lucas and Kim have had past issues with relationships, but they are drawn to each other.
Falling for the Firefighter is the tale of  chance meetings and second chances. It was a sweet story with a touch of humor.

Reconnected by Jaycee Clark:

Rainy and Lee were together years ago, but split.  They are reunited when Rainy needs a safe place to stay after witnessing a crime.  Their relationship didn't end on a good note, and Rainy is still upset over it.  But to save her life, she stays.

Being in close courters under the circumstances pulls them back together, in every way. Reconnecting them into a new relationship with their new selves, one that will stand up to trials.

Coming Home by N.J. Walters:

Tobias is home after a long stint undercover, but it isn't just a quick visit, He's on extended leave to decide if he's going to return to work as an agent.  First night home, and he runs into THE woman from his past, neighbor Kansas.

Coming home is a story that merges friends to lovers, and  falling for your best friends little sister into one steamy sweet story.

Bran’s Christmas Miracle

Bran opens the umbrella as I step out the passenger side of Dad’s four-runner. “This weather fucking sucks, Captain.”
“Don’t be a Grinch, embrace California in December.” I brush my lips over his scruffy cheek. “The rest of the country gets a White Christmas or Silver Bells. We score pelting rain.”
The Sacramento Mall’s parking lot is packed with fellow procrastinators. Bran ushers me around a giant puddle as his phone rings, barely audible over the downpour.
“Aren’t you going to answer that?”
“Nope, I’m here with you.” His half smile does double duty as a grimace. “Shopping.”
“You make it sound like medieval torture.”
“If malls existed in the fourteen hundreds, I’ve no doubt the Spanish inquisition would have put them to good use.”
“Sorry I left this to the last minute. Buying presents for my dad is so hard.”
Bran rubs against me as we step onto the sidewalk. “I’m the hard one, Captain.”
I nudge him back and tap my lower lip. “Maybe we can sneak into a department store dressing room. Have a little ho, ho, ho for two?” Got to say, the idea of Bran rocking into me while I watch in a three-way mirror has a certain appeal.
A low groan tears from his throat. “Maybe I’m in the holiday spirit after all.”
“Santa can put us both on the naughty list.” I giggle before a sobering realization douses my anticipation. “Crap, wait, aren’t there security cameras behind the mirrors to catch shoplifters?”
Bran opens the mall’s entrance door, pulling me close as we enter. His tongue slides up the backside of my ear, the place that always makes me shiver. “I’ll take my chances if you will.”
“Sorry, Tiger, the idea of a security guard watching my bare ass while polishing off a Krispy Kreme is killing my lady boner. Save it for the veranda.”
We’re crashing on the broken futon at Dad and Jessie’s tonight. It’s a little sucky, but I’m not kicking my baby brother, Wyatt, out of his nursery.
Bran grimaces. “But that means Chester will watch.”
“You and that chinchilla.” I roll my eyes. “What’s the deal? He’s adorable.”
“You mean a bloody nightmare. The way he looks at me?” Bran cringes. “It’s just not right.”
“Come to think of it, I’ve never seen him looking at anyone. He’s normally, a little, you know, preoccupied?” I make a subtle wack off motion.
“Fucking hell.”
A mother leaving Starbucks with her two small children gives us a dirty look.
“Hush! Can’t take you anywhere.”
“But you’re the one who--”
I poke him in the upper ribs, while debating a peppermint latte.
He yelps. “Bloody hell, Captain, not the ticklish spot.”
“Was that a squeak?” I poke again, harder. “Wow, didn’t know you could hit that octave.”
“Stop, stop,” he gasps, trying to twist free but laughing too hard to move.
“Pretty sure dropping f-bombs at the mall is illegal, especially on Christmas Eve.”
“Fine. Fine.” He throws up his arms in mock surrender. “Anything you say.”
We’ve made it to the mall’s center. An embossed sign reads “North Pole” and a red carpet leads to a bored looking Santa lounging on a velvet throne. There’s no line, guess everyone’s already taken their obligatory holiday pictures. An elf photographer absently jingles a bell.
Suddenly, I get an idea. An awful idea. A wonderful, awful idea.
Bran’s green eyes widen a fraction. “Captain? That smile, it scares me.”
“Anything I say, huh?” I grab his jacket and tug him closer.
“Please tell me you’ve changed your mind about the dressing room.” He arches a brow, his expression wolfish. “That jumper does things to me.”
I glance at the ugly Christmas sweater Jessie’s mother knit me, it’s a picture of a sleigh and says “I believe.” As ugly sweaters go, this is probably their high lord and master, but I didn’t have the heart to reject it.
Obviously Bran finds my outfit hilarious.
I release my hold and cross my arms. “Just for that, you’re going to do whatever I say.”
“Fine, highness, what’s my punishment?”
I point at Santa Claus.
“No.” Horror takes root in his features. “No, no, no.”
“Hey, you said anything.” I shoot him a look. The look. “You can’t put caveats on what you’ll do for love. Don’t be Meatloaf”
A muscle twitches in his temple. “And what exactly do you want me to do?”
It takes epic restraint not to rub my hands together. Oh, man, this is going to be fun. “I want a picture of you on Santa’s lap.”
There’s a drawn out silence. “Little Drummer Boy” plays over the sound system.
“Captain.” His intense green eyes are panicked. “I can’t.”
I tap the toe of my boot on the ground. “What are the last four letters of American?”
He throws up his hands. “But I’m Australian.”
“You’re a token American now, even have a fancy new green card thanks to Zavtra.”
His phone rings again.
“Jesus, who keeps calling?” I ask.
He tugs out his smart phone and holds the call screen for my inspection. “Speak of the devil.”
“Z’s calling?” I shake my head. “On Christmas Eve?”
“He doesn’t get out much.”
“Your boss needs to get a life.”
“Or get laid.” Bran powers off the phone and shoves it in his pocket. “So,” his sigh is epic. “A photo of me with Santa Claus, huh?”
I bat my eyes. “Make my Christmas wish come true.”
“Bloody hell.” He hands me the umbrella and sets his shoulders as if preparing to face down a firing squad.
“You’ll do it?” My jaw drops.
“Of course.” His look is unfathomable. “You asked me too.”
I snort. “Since when does that ever make a difference?”
He gives my forehead a peck. “Consider this a holiday miracle.” He turns and strides up the red carpet, past the giant Christmas tree and reindeer cutouts, arms rigid at his sides. I press my fist to my mouth, stifling giggles.
There’s no way he’ll go through with this.
He exchanges a few curt words with the elf who glances in my direction with an amused expression before ushering Bran forward.
Santa straightens in his throne and hands Bran a candy cane. The elf nudges Bran’s shoulder, coaxes him to sit on the edge of the big man’s knee. Bran looks like he might commit murder, but he perches, doesn’t flinch, even when the elf shoves reindeer horns on his head.
The elf heads back to the camera and calls out, “One, Two, Three, Merry Christmas.”
Then Bran does it, he switches on a smile that lights up his whole face, and sets my damn heart afire. I’m so charmed that I can barely stand it.
Santa and Bran exchange a few more words before he stands and saunters toward me.
“Oh my god, I can’t believe you did that,” I say.
The elf motions for us to stay put as the printer hums to life.
“Merry Christmas, Captain.” He gives me a brusque kiss on the tip of my nose.
“So, naughty boy.” I whisper into the side of his neck. “Did Santa happen ask what you wanted for Christmas?”

“Yeah.” He braces my face between his hands and this time his kiss is slow and gentle. “I told him I already have it.”
