CLOSE COVER by Lexi Blake

Remy Guidry doesn’t do relationships. He tried the marriage thing once, back in Louisiana, and learned the hard way that all he really needs in life is a cold beer, some good friends, and the occasional hookup. His job as a bodyguard with McKay-Taggart gives him purpose and lovely perks, like access to Sanctum. The last thing he needs in his life is a woman with stars in her eyes and babies in her future. Lisa Daley’s life is finally going in the right direction. She has finally graduated from college after years of putting herself through school. She’s got a new job at an accounting firm and she’s finished her Sanctum training. Finally on her own and having fun, her life seems pretty perfect. Except she’s lonely and the one man she wants won’t give her a second look. There is one other little glitch. Apparently, her new firm is really a front for the mob and now they want her dead. Assassins can really ruin a fun girls’ night out. Suddenly strapped to the very same six-foot-five-inch hunk of a bodyguard who makes her heart pound, Lisa can’t decide if this situation is a blessing or a curse. As the mob closes in, Remy takes his tempting new charge back to the safest place he knows—his home in the bayou. Surrounded by his past, he can’t help wondering if Lisa is his future. To answer that question, he just has to keep her alive.

Review

I've picked up a few of Lexi Blakes books in this series and enjoyed them a lot, so when I found out about this crossover with some of my other favorite authors I knew I had to dive in.  Though all of the stories are interconnected, I do feel as if they each can stand alone if you haven't read the rest.

Close Cover gives us Remy's story and it was one I've been wanting to read. There's sort of this forbidden love aspect - mostly in that Remy is forbidding himself from wanting Lisa or acting on those feelings which adds to the angst of the story.  But the moment Lisa is in danger - Remy is all in to protect her and that means doing whatever he has to do.

Lisa was a fun character - she's sassy too.  But she's also a softer person, one who can be hurt easily.

This story wasn't as quick a read as the others in the Crossover books, but it was definitely worth the time, though at times I felt parts were slower than needed, in the end it all came together to deliver an amazing story full of angst, drama, suspense and of course a few touches of humor.  Remy and Lisa's interactions really brought to life the connection between them and though Remy may not have thought he wanted to feel for Lisa what he does, his opinion changes the more engaged they become.

HER GUARDIAN ANGEL by Larissa Ione

After a difficult childhood and a turbulent stint in the military, Declan Burke finally got his act together. Now he’s a battle-hardened professional bodyguard who takes his job at McKay-Taggart seriously and his playtime – and his playmates – just as seriously. One thing he never does, however, is mix business with pleasure. But when the mysterious, gorgeous Suzanne D’Angelo needs his protection from a stalker, his desire for her burns out of control, tempting him to break all the rules…even as he’s drawn into a dark, dangerous world he didn’t know existed. Suzanne is an earthbound angel on her critical first mission: protecting Declan from an emerging supernatural threat at all costs. To keep him close, she hires him as her bodyguard. It doesn’t take long for her to realize that she’s in over her head, defenseless against this devastatingly sexy human who makes her crave his forbidden touch. Together they’ll have to draw on every ounce of their collective training to resist each other as the enemy closes in, but soon it becomes apparent that nothing could have prepared them for the menace to their lives…or their hearts.

Review

Her Guardian Angel was a quick read - but it had everything I love about the stories in the Demonica world.

Suzanne and Declan's story brings quite the drama and a lot more. Suzanne isn't happy in her life as memitem - sure she feels the duty, she wants to protect and keep her primori, Declan, safe - but more than that she wants to live her life. She wishes she could focus on her dreams rather than what she knows she must do, what she's called to do. But something about Declan calls to her as well and she's willing to risk taking a chance or two and finding some moment of happiness - even if it can't last.

Declan's suffered in the past, been through a lot, lost those he cared for and he's got daddy issues. When he's called in as bodyguard to Suzanne, Declan knows there's something more going on - but he'd never dreamed of the truth or of the world lurking alongside his that he knew nothing about.

As Suzanne and Declan spend time together and grow closer, the truth of their relationship is about to come out - and it just might be something neither of them is expecting.

Full of secrets, half truths, life struggles and more, Declan and Suzanne have a lot to wade through to survive - but it will be worth it if they can do it together.

SAY YOU WON'T LET GO by Corinne Michaels

I’ve had two goals my entire life: 1. Make it big in country music. 2. Get the hell out of Bell Buckle. I was doing it. I was on my way, until Cooper Townsend landed backstage at my show in Dallas. This gorgeous, rugged, man of few words was one cowboy I couldn’t afford to let distract me. But with his slow smile and rough hands, I just couldn’t keep away. Now, there are outside forces conspiring against us. Maybe we should’ve known better? Maybe not. Even with the protection from Wade Rycroft, bodyguard for McKay-Taggart, I still don’t feel safe. I won’t let him get hurt because of me. All I know is that I want to hold on, but know the right thing to do is to let go…

HIS TO PROTECT by Carly Phillips

Talia Shaw has spent her adult life working as a scientist for a big pharmaceutical company. She’s focused on saving lives, not living life. When her lab is broken into and it's clear someone is after the top secret formula she’s working on, she turns to the one man she can trust. The same irresistible man she turned away years earlier because she was too young and naive to believe a sexy guy like Shane Landon could want her. Shane Landon’s bodyguard work for McKay-Taggart is the one thing that brings him satisfaction in his life. Relationships come in second to the job. Always. Then little brainiac Talia Shaw shows up in his backyard, frightened and on the run, and his world is turned upside down. And not just because she’s found him naked in his outdoor shower, either. With Talia's life in danger, Shane has to get her out of town and to her eccentric, hermit mentor who has the final piece of the formula she’s been working on, while keeping her safe from the men who are after her. Guarding Talia's body certainly isn't any hardship, but he never expects to fall hard and fast for his best friend’s little sister and the only woman who’s ever really gotten under his skin.

Review

I love the best friends little sister angle this story has as it's always been a fun trope to watch play out, add in the danger and suspense and this book is a quick and enjoyable read.

Talia is a smart woman, but also one who knows when she needs to accept help.  Shane was an intriguing character as well.  I really liked the interactions between the two, that mutual chemistry that was palpable from moment one, even if they hadn't admitted their feelings.

Carly Phillips knows how to add in drama and suspense to keep a reader hooked and this book was no different, it was a unique balance of romance and everything else.  The danger surrounding Talia just added to the feelings between these two and made Shane all the more determined to save her.

EXCERPT

Rescuing Sadie by Susan Stoker
Sadie faced the man in front of her without trepidation. Sean Taggart might know twenty ways to kill without making a sound thanks to his time as a Green Beret, but to her, he was just Uncle Sean. She’d only known him for six years, ever since Aunt Grace got married, but he’d always supported her no matter what she wanted to do and treated her and her aunt Grace like princesses. Not this time. “Uncle Sean, this is ridiculous.” Sean crossed his arms, giving her what she knew was his “displeased” face. Brows drawn, lips pressed together, eyes narrowed. “It’s not and you know it.” “Why can’t I just go back up to Dallas with you?” Her uncle sighed. They’d been over this before, but Sadie couldn’t let it go. “Because Jonathan is still missing. Captain Jackson said he’d continue to look after you until he’s caught.” Sadie shook her head. “But if I came home, you could keep me safe.” Sean looked down at her with love in his eyes. His voice gentled. “I could, you’re right. But I think we both know that you wouldn’t like my kind of protection. Or Ian’s. Or anyone else we could find.” She knew what he meant without him coming right out and saying it. Sean was overprotective. As was Ian, and probably most of the other men who worked for McKay-Taggart. She could handle their overprotectiveness and bossiness…but only to a point. If she had to endure it twenty-four seven, it could damage their relationship. And that was the last thing she wanted. “I can go stay with Milena’s parents again,” Sadie volunteered almost desperately. Maybe she’d even make it in time for Milena’s surprise engagement party. She might not want to become one of McKay-Taggart’s overprotected clients, but she wasn’t sure she wanted to be in close quarters with Chase Jackson anymore either. From the second she’d laid eyes on the man, she’d wanted him. It was as if her body had said, This is it. This is the man I want. Unfortunately, he’d been in the middle of rescuing her from a crazed, perverted pedophile at the time, and now she was afraid he felt responsible for her, rather than wanting her back.

REVIEW

Rescuing Sadie was full of action, angst, and of course blooming romance.  Sadie had major feelings for Chase, but believed he didn't like her, that he couldn't want her around, so she tried to get her Uncle to take over her protection again, but Sadie couldn't be more wrong about Chase's feelings. And when she gives in to him, she discovers so much more about her own.

While Sadie is in danger, Chase wanted to take his time before declaring his intentions, he wanted to let her get used to normalcy again, but once he discovers she believes he doesn't like her - he lays it all out on the line - She's his and will be forever his - if she'll have him that is.

Sadie was a strong character, she didn't flinch from danger, she didn't want to hide or be scared - even when she was. She did what she had to do and would do it all over again if she had to because that's the kind of woman she is.  She's loyal, and fierce, but also deserving of romance and love.

Chase has suffered his own painful past, one that he's never talked about to anyone before and yet as he begins to open up to Sadie he realizes he needs to discuss it.

With lurking danger, and hearts on the line, Rescuing Sadie will grab your attention and keep you hooked from beginning to end. All while delivering a great love story and a wild ride along the way.
