This personal note is something the author asked that we share with you:
A NOTE FROM THE AUTHOR
This book is not a romantic fairy tale. Yet, it’s the most romantic story I’ve ever told. It’s a journey of pain and loss, of hope and happiness. It’s both achingly tragic and exquisitely beautiful. It’s a love story. A true love story about real love. The kind that sees you through the night and holds you when you cry. The kind that won't give up and never lets go. The kind we all dream about and few find. But it’s real. I promise you, it’s real. I’ve seen this kind of love, and I've seen this kind of heartbreak. I got to see it up close and personal, and quite honestly, I will never be the same. I hope it changes you as much as it changed me.
The Empty Jar
Three months touring Europe.
Romantic. Dazzling. Unforgettable.
The trip of a lifetime.
But some lifetimes are shorter…
We couldn’t have known it would work out this way. No one could. No one could’ve guessed that something so beautiful could be so tragic.
But it is tragic.
Yet so, so beautiful.
That’s what sacrifice is—beauty and tragedy.
It’s pain and suffering for something or someone you love.
And this is the ultimate sacrifice.
One stunning act of true love.
This is our story.
Our true love story.

When M. Leighton first posted about this story, with her note, her warning that it is not a fairytale, it is not your typical love story, but it was the most romantic thing she'd written, I wasn't sure how to take the note, but I knew that I sure wanted to read it. When I started reading this story, I fell in love with the characters, I fell in love with the writing, and mostly I was impossibly sucked into the story and every single feeling it wrought from my soul.
This story is NOT a fairytale - there's no Prince Charming, no magical charms, but it does have the love between a man and woman,. It's no romantic comedy, though there are moments you will smile or laugh a little. This book IS a Romance, it is a love story an all consuming amazing romance that shows the true depth of love, the pain of a journey, and brings it all to us in a beautifully moving tale.
Everyone has heard the familiar verse, 'Love is patient, Love is Kind...'. You hear the platitudes 'Love means never having to say your sorry...'. Every person in the world has a vision of what love looks like, what love feels like, what love IS. M. Leighton has taken these visions, these feelings of mine and added to them, altered them in a way that I am undeniably changed.
I'm not going to give away many details not only because I don't believe in spoiling books, but because this book, this story, this testament to love is one that needs to be read, you as a reader need to soak up every moment and feel every part.
This book is heartbreaking and heartwarming all at the same time, It's fulfilling while leaving you adrift. The emotions this book will evoke will overwhelm you but you will find yourself feeling the need to do it all over again. Nate and Lena bring us a powerful story, a story full of faith, and hope, and adventure. But mostly Nate and Lena's story is about LOVE.
M. Leighton pieced together an unbelievably moving love story that defies all those written previously. This book is one that will stay with readers long after they finish, its going to be a hard act to follow. It's only May, and this book shot to the top of my favorites - If I could only tell you to read ONE book this year -- It would be this one.
