Toxic takes us down quite a twisted road with Alex and Maria on their journey together.
Alex is dealing with a lot of personal demons, ghosts that haunt him and in an effort to push it all away he's turned to unhealthy vices - namely booze and babes. But still it isn't helping him and it's starting to cause problems with his family and job. Alex meets Maria while on a supposed vacation to help heal himself and there's something about her that calls to him, though he tries to ignore it. Maria's got his number though and she's not willing to let him off with a simple I'm sorry, here's some money.
Maria left home to go to school, after two years of community college, she's ready to get out there in the real world and finish her studies, but she's not completely alone - she's got family nearby. When Maria's working in her aunt's bar one night - who should unexpectedly walk in but Alex - and boy does she remember him. Sensing he hasn't changed at all - she lets him have it again for thinking he could 'buy' her off.
But Maria is good for Alex, soothing his demons in a way, but as with any romance, there are bumps in the road and obstacles to overcome. Alex has to decide if he's going to be lost in his past, in his pain and let it continue to eat him up or if he's going to overcome his demons. Maria knows what she deserves and she's not willing to settle for less - even if it hurts her to say goodbye.
Toxic hits on lots of emotions, it's about love and steamy moments yes, but it's also so much more involved than that. It's about battling demons and knowing when you need to accept help. It's about finding a way to gain forgiveness - even when it comes from within.
