I check my watch for the hundredth time.
11:40 a.m.
That’s three hours and ten minutes of sitting in this bland, uncomfortable waiting room, even though I made sure to arrive at eight thirty sharp this time, when visiting hours opened.
If there’s one thing I can say about Fulcort, it’s that it’s quickly becoming as predictable as a thief browsing a shop full of jewels.
And, I swear, that woman who just passed into security arrived well after me. So did the last five people they called. But I don’t dare complain. That leering, strip-search-threatening security guard from last weekend is there again today, stealing frequent looks my way that make the hairs on my arms stand on end.
With a heavy sigh, I sink back into the LSAT prep text book I borrowed from a friend, keeping one ear perked for my name to be called. It’s hard to focus—what with all the buzzers buzzing and people milling impatiently and Pervy Parker’s brusque barking—but time is not a luxury I can afford to waste, not if I’m actually going to pay the registration fees and take this test in the fall.
In my periphery, I sense a figure approaching, and a moment later they settle into the chair directly beside me. Even though there’s an open section across from me that would give this person—this male, based on the black Adidas and dark wash jeans that I can see from my hunched angle and the spicy cologne I just inhaled—an empty seat on either side of him. But, no, he has to sit down

me.
I grit my teeth, annoyed. But I’m in a prison waiting area and likely to go in soon, so there’s no need to cause a potential scene by getting up and moving. Either way, I shift my body to give him the back of my shoulder.
“You want to be a lawyer, huh?” the stranger says, and somehow his deep, raspy voice slides down my spine like liquid honey.
And now he’s reading over my shoulder.
As much as I’d like to ignore him, my father’s words from last weekend about making enemies ring in my ear. I don’t need to be making enemies around here either. “Yup,” I murmur politely, but keep my head down.
“Smart and beautiful. I haven’t had that combination. Yet.” There’s no mistaking the humor in his voice. Or the insinuation.
Had?
Yet?
This is where my politeness ends. “Look, no offense? But I’m not here to get hit on by….” The rest of the words fall off as I turn to find myself caught in intense blue eyes the color of nightfall.
Oh shit.
It’s the guy from last week. The sexy-as-all-hell guy.
The one visiting the mob boss.
I clear my throat several times as a wild rash of flutters stirs in my stomach.
His lips curve into a knowing smirk, as if he can sense my reaction. He’s somehow even more attractive today. Almost model-pretty, with that cutting jawline, high cheekbones, and deep-set eyes. But the thin layer of stubble coating his cheeks, the rough hands, the slouchy, legs-spread way he sits in that chair radiates masculinity.
Pretty, but likely dangerous, I remind myself. God only knows how dangerous. This guy was visiting Fulcort’s version of Al Capone last week. For all I know, he’s a mob henchman. Maybe he knows where that missing witness went.
Maybe he’s the one who helped make him disappear.
I need to stay far away from this man.
“I’m no expert, but I’m guessing lawyers who can’t find their tongues don’t do very well in that profession.” His gaze drops to my mouth, where it sits for several beats. “Sorry, what were you saying? Something about not being here to get hit on by…?”
I clear my throat again. Being outright rude to him would be as stupid as welcoming his cocky version of flirtation. I settle for polite honesty. “By anyone.” But especially not by the goddamn mob.
“I guess it’s a good thing I wasn’t hitting on you then.” His dark blue eyes drift casually around the room. “You’re not my type.”
“Well… good.” I duck my head as I try to shake my embarrassment. What is his type, I wonder? Silicone-filled, no doubt. Likely also dubious morals and a loose—
“Who are you visiting?”
“My father,” I find myself answering before I can stop myself. I hesitate. “You?”
He smirks. “Same.”
My stomach drops. This guy isn’t a mobster minion. He’s the son of a mob boss. Is that better or worse?

Rocky Ground is book 4 in the Crimson Point Series, and like previous books, it will suck you in with the story of Tiana and Aiden and of course the previous characters of the series as well. 

Tiana is a woman who's been through a lot and as a single mom, she's determined to do right by her child and part of that is staying man free. But she can't help but be sucked in by Aiden as he works his way past her defenses and into her life.  Tiana has a right to be afraid of relationships, of making the wrong decision, but it's clear to see that Aiden could be someone safe for her.  

With the usual sideline of romance and a tangle of suspense, action and mystery, Rocky Ground will pull you in and hold you in it's grips as you try to figure things out and watch these two succumb to the feelings between them.  With the addition of familiar faces, and Tiana's daughter to add to the fun, Rocky Ground is full of a bit of everything that will leave readers satisfied but wanting more from the series.

~ORLEY~ Noble was making sure not to step on any cracks in the sidewalk. There were so many, it proved to be a daunting task which had her skipping around like a deranged bunny. I was so focused on her antics that I didn’t notice the huge figure coming around the corner at a rapid pace. Noble was directly in his path. His long legs ate up the distance at a steady job, and he had to jump to the side to avoid plowing Noble over. She fell backward onto her butt as the tatted-up man leapt to avoid her. He had on the same hat he had been wearing the night before, and a pair of mirrored, aviator sunglasses covered his eyes. I could see my shocked reflection staring back at me as he paused, putting his hands on his knees so he could catch his breath. I wasn’t sure if he was winded from his run, or from the near-miss with the wide-eyed three-year-old at his feet. He wasn’t wearing a shirt, so I could see he was inked from his collarbone all the way down to the waistband of the black, nylon shorts he was wearing. Even his legs had random images and swirls of color decorating the strong lines. A light sheen of sweat covered every inch of his taut, artistic skin, highlighting his well-defined muscles and the lines of strength that made up his impressive build. He wasn’t my type. Not at all. In another life, I wouldn’t have thought to look twice at a guy who looked like him. Tattoos weren’t common in the circles where I used to travel. Now, caught unwillingly in this new life, I was having a hard time looking away. I helped Noble to her feet, and noticed my daughter was also stunned into a rare silence in the presence of this imposing, impressive man. He popped out one of his earbuds and pushed to his full height. I wished he weren’t wearing the mirrored glasses so I could see the color of his eyes. It was an odd reaction, so I cleared my throat and wiped my free hand nervously down the front of my jeans. “Uh… Sorry. She’s been inside all day and has excess energy to burn.” He lifted his chin in acknowledgment and I tried not to swallow my tongue as a single drop of moisture slid down the strong line of his throat. I cleared my throat and squeezed Noble’s hand so tightly she squealed and gave me a questioning look. “Ummm… thank you for the rescue last night. I should have said something before taking off, but yesterday was quite possibly the second worst day of my life and I wasn’t thinking clearly. That guy was very scary; I don’t know what I would have done if you hadn’t intervened.”

I can’t keep doing this to him. He has a life and most likely a girlfriend. Tomorrow I will leave. I will ask to borrow some money and get far away from him. He has done enough. I will make it on my own. I get out of bed and creep down the hall to tell him my plan. I expect to find him in the kitchen, maybe needing a late-night snack, not the bathroom. Because why wouldn’t he have just used the master bath? The sound of heavy breathing snaps up my attention and I look toward the hall bathroom. The light isn’t on but I hear a barely audible groan on the other side of the cracked door. I push it open and watch the man I have fantasized about for the past few days working his cock with one hand while he steadies himself by holding onto the sink. I can’t stop staring. He is so big, so aroused…and so am I. I want him. I want to be the one making him groan and pant. Without warning, he turns and our eyes lock.

I feel like complete shit. Griffin is doing the noble thing, protecting my virtue and his heart. I am such a bitch.
Dylan is important to me. I care for him. Love him. But in what way? If it is a romantic type of love, then why didn’t I feel guilty when I touched Griffin? Or when I think about him taking me, claiming me? Griffin turns and walks to the living room. I pathetically escape to the bedroom. I am no longer afraid of the nightmares that could plague me if I even manage to fall asleep tonight. No, what I fear are the dreams I may have of the man who has just protected me from myself.



REVIEW

I Dream of Spiders was my first book by Elle Keating, but I'm sure it won't be my last.  Keating delivers a wonderfully suspenseful novel within the pages of this book, one that not only draws you in, but captivates even further with every flip of the page. 

Griffin's struggling to move on with his life after dealing with some major stuff, He needs to hide himself away for a little while to work through his pain and anger and figure out what he's going to do next, so his friends cabin in the middle of nowhere seems like the perfect place to be, until he almost runs over a woman in the road kicking off quite the mystery. 

The story takes us on a wandering path, learning more about Griffin and what he's been through while also trying to figure out what our mystery woman has been through, who she's running from, and what happened to her.  The story is written with quite the mysterious tone, but gives little details here and there, allowing you to piece things together without offering up the whole answer so keeping you hooked from page to page. 

I loved the interspersed POVs in this book, because it really helped me dig deeper into the story and learn these characters more.  

With it's mysterious edge, an undeniable connection and attraction between these two characters and a story that will keep you guessing, I Dream Of Spiders will keep you guessing as you wait to find out if our mystery woman ever learns the truth and what will become of her and Griffin if and when she does.
