Review
What an amazing story this book is. Clay and Andi's story is not your happy go lucky fun romance. It's not typical and its not always easy. They are both running from something, though different things haunt them, they are connected by one thing, the need to escape the past and do it together.
Clay's been hiding out for a couple of months, getting the hang of being the new him, the unknown version, hiding in plain sight. When he gives in and decides to visit his mother after not seeing her for a while, he ends up on train where he comes across a woman that he can't ignore. He can see that she's in a situation, like him, one that she needs to get away from, and something is calling to Clay to help her.
Andi knows escaping is the only way she'll survive, she's got to get out of the city, get away from her problems, to do so she's risking alot. When Clay tries to assist her on the train ride to her new life, she's not sure what to think, when she discovers a little about him, she's really not sure about him; but events transpire that make her believe in his sincerity and even grow a bond with him.
Clay promises Andi that he's going to help her and she'll never have to face her past again, and in doing so he's also going to be hiding from his own past.
Drowning takes us on an emotional journey of two people and their suffering. Though they are both dealing with things on opposite ends of the spectrum, one thing is clear; if they stop running - they'll be back in over their heads drowning. Some parts of this story are hard to read, because the truth of them is painful, each offense adding another stab of pain. Clay is such a good guy, despite the fact that he's running instead of standing against the falsities that have landed him in such a position. His desire to help Andi is built out of more than just a connection to her, more than the possibility of a relationship. Andi is a character who doesn't know her own strength, she feels beat down and maybe even a little guilt about doing things the way she is.
The interactions between Clay and Andi show their deep connection. The fact that Andi, once she hears Clay's story, doesn't blame him at all shows a lot of how she trusts him. Though their friendship started rocky, it quickly grew and built up into something much more complex. The problem is, the past doesn't just go away, it's always there, lurking, waiting to strike out at you again. And when you have such extreme problems from the past haunting you, it's inevitable you'll have to eventually face them again. The question is, when will that happen and what will they choose to do?
To be free from the past, Clay and Andi have much more to do than avoid it and hide out. With each passing moment, as I read, I wondered when that pivotal moment would come. I kept waiting for something to happen, someone to find them, or recognize Clay. The book was woven together amazingly and though I kept waiting for the fall out, I also fell deeper in love with the characters along the way.
