Eliza came awake with none of her usual crispness and ready-
to-take-on-the-world attitude. She felt as though she’d been hit by a truck and
her first instinct was to roll over and pull the covers over her head and sleep
for several more hours. Even as she knew she wouldn’t do any such thing, it was
still a nice thought. Still, she thought she could give herself another five
minutes before stumbling out of bed and into the shower.
For once, things were slow at Devereaux Security Services after
a veritable shit storm of activity over the last several months. She only hoped
something popped up when she went into the office today, otherwise it was going
to be another boring- ass day at work.
Just as she roused herself from her laziness and threw her legs
over the side of the bed to stand, the landline on her nightstand rang. She
glanced down at it, frowning. If it was Dane or anyone else from DSS, surely
they’d call her cell. A quick look told her that her cell phone was on the
nightstand charging and a glance at it also told her she hadn’t missed any
calls. If this was a telemarketer calling her at oh-dark-thirty so help her she
was going to hunt them down and shove her foot as far up their ass as she
could.
If it weren’t for the fact that it could be one
of her coworkers she would have simply ignored the ringing all together. With a
sigh, she yanked up the phone and barked an unwelcome hello into the receiver.
There was a short pause and then the clearing of a throat. “Miss
Caldwell? Melissa Caldwell?”
Eliza froze, her blood turning to ice in her veins. She hadn’t
heard that name in ten years. Hadn’t been that person in ten years.
And in two seconds flat, her past had slammed into her present like a speeding
train.
“What do you want?” she asked in a dull voice.
“This is Clyde Barksdale, district attorney for Keerney County,
Oregon.”
She knew damn well who Clyde Barksdale was. Like she’d forget
that it was him she’d worked with to put Thomas Harrington away?
“I take it this isn’t a social call,” she said acidly.
“You’d be correct.” The DA emitted an exhausted sounding sigh.
“Look, there’s no easy way to say this but Thomas Harrington won an appeal to
overturn his conviction and he’ll be set free in three weeks’ time.”
Eliza’s knees folded and she landed with a hard bounce on the
bed. She was utterly numb with shock, and she shook her head in an effort to
dispel the fog and confusion surrounding her. Was this some fucked-up
dream—nightmare—she was trapped in?
If you've ever read a Maya Banks book, you know she's wonderful at blending a romantic tale with the element of suspense. She can have your heart pumping one minute from a sensous moment and pounding while on the edge of your seat wondering what's going to happen next. This book is no different.
Eliza has a past, one she keeps secret, one she thought she'd been able to move beyond and attempt to make a life for herself. She's a strong woman, one who knows terror, she's faced the bad guy and come out on top, at least for a little while. Then she gets a call that changes everything and she knows nothing will be the same again; her past is coming to visit. She has to run.
Wade's a man who knows what he wants, and is willing to do whatever it takes to get it. He's not perfect, nor would he claim to be, but he can be a determined man, he can do what needs doing if for no other reason that it helps him get what he wants; and right now, that's Eliza.
The relationship between Eliza and Wade is different than most, its taken some time to build it up, taken work for Wade to get in there with Eliza, who had built up walls to protect herself and anyone else from her past. I love the banter between these two, the quick wit, but also the fact that Wade can see through Eliza's fronts, he can tell that something is wrong without her admitting a word. The chemistry between Wade and Eliza is off the charts, their connection is so very visible.
Maya Banks has woven a thrilling ride with the details of Eliza's past, and the man she thought she'd put behind her. Eliza's fear is palpable and with the turn of each page, I wondered what was going to jump out on me, holding my breath and letting it out often. But spun in pieces in between the fear, the worry, and the suspense, were more important things, Wade's determination to help Eliza, to do what he could to protect her and Eliza's need for closure, her need for facing the demon she's never been able to rid herself of.
With Every Breath is full of twists and turns that will not only suck you in, but hit you with emotion after emotion leaving you breathless and wanting more. The suspense is broken apart smoothly by steamy moments, and a growing romance.
I haven't read every book in this series, and though I wouldn't say its necessary, I definitely want to go back and read them all in order to see what little things are added as you progress from book to book. I felt like there were little details in previous books that would have lent a deeper understanding to this book.
