In Your Dreams, in Five Words
Duty. One of the most important threads to In Your Dreams is the sense of duty that is the creed Casey’s father lives by. It stands in the way of dreams, and Casey can’t understand how you could possibly choose duty first…over your passion.
Courage. This one is 100 percent Murphy’s word. She is courage. Even when she’s not being brave. Not every courageous act is grand, and some of them come in baby steps—inching your way to the goal. Murphy’s courage is quiet…until it’s not.
Family. The Sullivans and the Coffields are incredibly different families. This story also throws in a third element—Houston’s family (from book 3 in the Falling series). You get the warmth that Casey craves at Houston’s home, and you see how drawn he is to it in Murphy’s. But his own family is defined by different qualities. Providing for one another is at the center of every decision, but it comes at a cost—Casey’s youth was full of coldness and loneliness. This story really opens up those dynamics and explores the different colors of love—even its ugly side.
Selflessness. I’m not going to say much about this word, but just know that it takes us all a while to get to it. Even Casey Coffield.

I love this little bit of inner dialogue by Casey because how often have we heard others preach about patience being a virtue. Patience is hard, and waiting sucks. And I love how eloquently it came out in his head. I high-fived myself after this line.
This visit. Him finding me. His interest. It’s all selfish. It’s all exactly what I expect from Casey Coffield. But, and I hate to admit it, it also felt really nice to hear him say I’m special. - Murphy SullivanEven more than Casey calling her special, I love the fact that it sticks around in her mind. She’s impervious to his charm, but that one little word finds a crack. This is where it all begins, and I love that moment of every story—whether I read it or write it.
“Hey, hey, trolley, come on pick my brother up. Hey, hey dolly, how’d you like a buttercup?” - Murphy SullivanI really love this entire scene, but this little snippet from a childhood song that Murphy wrote for and sings to her brother is just a special moment in the story. Her brother, Lane, has Down’s Syndrome, and I love the gentleness and sweetness and bonding between them over a silly little song that an older sister wrote for her brother when he had bad dreams.
“So, let’s get started,” I say, my voice loud and confident as I step into the soundproof door of a small studio room at the end of the hallway. My guitar case scratches against the nearby console. As I turn, it knocks over a rack of headphones. I reach to catch them, snagging my purse on the arm of a rolling chair, which both opens my purse wide, spilling my things all over the floor, and has the equal effect of slingshotting the chair into the glass wall of the sound booth. It all ends with a thunderous crack—that somehow doesn’t leave behind any permanent damage.That’s right. I’m in charge. -Murphy Sullivan

This is the heart. It’s where his mind works out all of these things his heart kinda knew way in advance. Murphy’s the real deal. And he couldn’t be prouder. It’s the right kind of love and respect.
