She can forgive, but can she forget?
Some days, Everly still thinks she sees him. In the food court at the mall, or in a car speeding past as the light changes. It only lasts a second, but when it happens, she slips back to a time when she was ruled-and nearly ruined-by August Kincaid. And it doesn't matter that she's moved on, that she's about to marry another man. In those moments the only thing she can do to regain control is take a deep breath and remind herself that August can't hurt her-because he's in a coma. Except that he's not anymore.
August is awake. With no memories, he sets out to solve the mystery of his lost life. He unearths a photograph of a beautiful redhead named Everly and knows instinctively that she's the key. But when he finds her, the August she describes is more monster than man.
Tortured by the thought of having hurt her, August wants only to become the man Everly deserves. As the new August emerges, Everly glimpses the person she first fell in love with. But can she trust that this August is real? When the final secret of their shared past is revealed, one of them will make a choice that changes their future forever . . .
Forgetting August is an emotional, surprise filled journey of two people and their path of love.
Imagine waking up after a long comatose state and finding yourself unable to recall even the smallest details about yourself, about your past. The only clues hidden in the few items you arrived at the hospital with, an ID, a photo, some clothing. That's what happens to August Kincaid, he awakes lost and lonely, unable to understand why nobody is there for him, why no ones been to see him even in his comatose state. The only clue he has is an old photograph in his wallet, with a name on it, Everly. But when the mysterious Everly finally arrives, she's not filled with joy or hope for August, and once he learns why he's in shock.
Everly thought she was over it, she thought she had left the past behind her as much as she could and she could just move on with life and eventually forget about it. That is until she gets the call she's dreaded for years, he's awake. Having to decide what to do with that information, where to go from that point is hard for Everly, but eventually she feels she needs to make one last stab at closure from the past, one final goodbye and maybe she can close that door. But what Everly finds when she steps into the hospital room is that August has no idea who she is, who he is, or what has happened. It's almost like a sick twisted joke, this man who she has despised for years, feared, is like a newborn with no knowledge of any wrongdoings or past pains.
What comes next is a story that will suck you in and keep you reading, grasping at straws to try to figure out the details before the characters reveal them. Watching as a man learns about himself through anothers eyes and memories only, watching as he tries to deal with that knowledge and fights against it. Everly and August's past was rife with pain and hurt and secrets and twists. As each part of the past unfolds and we get closer to uncovering the last bit of the mystery, we see these two people who have been on a long, twisty, emotional ride together, and its enough to pull on the heart strings.
J.L. Berg delivered a hit to the heart with this story, pulling you in and keeping you in the grip of the suspense, theorizing what happened, what could be coming up next, but also opening your eyes the feelings of these two people, to their lives at the moment and how they have gotten to this point and how it is going to be changed. This story was written in such an amazing way, that you can't help but be hooked, can't stop guessing and trying to figure it all out. I was left with a few shocks and now I want to dive right into the next book for more information and to see what comes next for these two characters and their story.
